Overview:

Acts as the primary senior staff member at a remote field camp. Responsible for overseeing all facets of daily operations, upkeep, and administration of the camp in line with the established protocols for the specific camp environment and seasonal strategy as directed by the Field Manager and Project Manager. Ensures adherence to program timelines and collaborates closely with the Continental Field Supervisor to implement the scientific agenda. Duties may encompass coordinating aerial support, supervising staff, meal preparation, communication, weather monitoring, skiway development, equipment handling, hazardous cargo certification, cargo logistics, and camp infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts all activities in accordance with the established operational protocols tailored to the camp's location. Adheres to the strategy outlined by the Project Manager and Field Area Manager.
  • Leads all components of the field science initiative in collaboration with the Continental Field Supervisor and Field Science Manager.
  • Oversees camp personnel and conducts end-of-season evaluations in partnership with the Continental Field Supervisor.
  • Acts as the safety coordinator, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and protocols by all team members. Reports all safety incidents and near misses following ASC safety guidelines.
  • Ensures that camp facilities and equipment are safely maintained and operated, that the camp remains organized, and that waste is managed appropriately throughout the season. Responsible for the identification, labeling, and handling of hazardous materials prior to their return.
  • Assigns daily priorities for equipment, materials, and scientific support in accordance with the seasonal plan.
  • May assist in the selection of camp staff during off-season planning as necessary and may engage in off-season strategy sessions if relevant.
  • Prepares cargo for field deployment, completing load plans and prioritization in coordination with the Continental Field Supervisor and transport coordinators.
  • Communicates effectively with staff to provide essential information for successful job performance, including staff meetings, performance reviews, job expectations, structured training, quality standards, and safety protocols.
  • Maintains comprehensive records of camp operations, including fuel usage, camp demographics, flight schedules, weather data, and emergency response events.
  • Completes the end-of-season report in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Implements safety, environmental, and health programs as mandated by USAP.
  • Supports search and rescue operations as directed by Field Area Leadership and the Emergency Operations Center.
  • Interacts professionally with National Science Foundation and other agency representatives, both via phone and in person.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining a safe work environment, ensuring that safety remains the top priority.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree is mandatory. An additional four years of relevant experience may substitute for the degree.
  • A minimum of four years of combined experience in areas such as weather reporting, equipment management, cargo logistics, fuel operations, skiway and camp construction, expedition planning in polar climates, outdoor education, and logistics.
  • At least two of the four years must be in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification is required.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications are necessary (training is provided at no cost through FEMA).

Desired Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven ability to lead and supervise in remote and isolated settings.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, proficiency in computer applications, and adept problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two seasons of experience in Arctic/Antarctic environments with direct involvement in polar field camps is preferred.

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and capability to deploy to Antarctica for extended durations.
  • Successful completion of medical and dental evaluations required for deployment.
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background checks mandated by the employer.
  • Must be able to lift and move items and equipment as per safety regulations.
  • Must be capable of performing physical tasks, including heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold conditions.
  • Participation in community programs, such as cleaning and recycling efforts, is expected.
  • A valid U.S. driver's license is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials; U.S. citizenship is necessary for authorization at this work location.
