Building Maintenance Specialist
Position Overview:
The primary responsibility of the Building Maintenance Specialist is to support the custodial team in ensuring a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff. This role involves performing a variety of cleaning tasks throughout the facility and may include assisting in the supervision and training of part-time and temporary custodial personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
Daily tasks in designated areas may include, but are not limited to:
- Dusting all flat surfaces
- Emptying waste receptacles
- Sweeping and mopping floors
- Cleaning and restocking restrooms
- Maintaining hallways, stairs, and landings
- Assisting with lunchroom clean-up
- Conducting weekly duties such as:
- High dusting
- Carpet cleaning
- Light bulb replacement
- Floor maintenance
- Managing energy efficiency tasks as needed
- Reporting maintenance needs to the supervisor
- Securing the premises by checking windows and doors before departure.
Additional Duties:
Assisting with other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Equipment Utilization:
The role requires the use of various hand tools and power equipment, including:
- Brooms and mops
- Floor cleaning machines
- Vacuum cleaners
- Snow removal equipment
- Basic office equipment such as computers and copiers.
Travel Requirements:
Occasional travel between facilities may be necessary.
Physical and Mental Demands:
The position involves working in standard office and school environments, with the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Exposure to cleaning chemicals and other environmental factors is expected. The candidate must meet the Physical Capacity Profile (PCP) requirements, which include:
- Climbing stairs and ladders
- Lifting and carrying weights as specified
- Performing physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and reaching.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Organizational and decision-making skills
- A professional demeanor and positive attitude
- Good judgment in recurring tasks.
Interpersonal Relations:
The role involves interaction with district personnel, customers, and vendors. The Building Maintenance Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete daily tasks, requiring tact and diplomacy in handling diverse situations.
Employee Expectations:
To ensure effective operations, employees are expected to fulfill all assigned duties and adhere to scheduled hours. Any deviations must be approved in advance. A professional appearance that reflects positively on the organization is required.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Completion of a Custodial Operations certificate is advantageous.
