Position Overview:

The Custodian plays a vital role in supporting the custodial team to ensure a clean, safe, and hygienic environment for both students and staff. This position involves performing a variety of cleaning tasks throughout the building or campus and may include assisting in the training and oversight of part-time custodial personnel.


Key Responsibilities:

Daily tasks may encompass, but are not limited to: dusting surfaces, emptying waste receptacles, cleaning pencil sharpeners, sweeping and mopping floors, organizing desks, maintaining restrooms, cleaning hallways, stairs, and other common areas, and ensuring the gym, locker rooms, and auditoriums are clean. Weekly responsibilities may include: buffing floors, high dusting, carpet cleaning, changing light bulbs, stripping and waxing floors, and washing walls. The custodian will also manage energy conservation tasks as required, coordinate with the Building Custodial Supervisor regarding school events and community usage of facilities, and respond to requests from staff, including setting up audio-visual equipment. Reporting maintenance needs and securing the building by checking windows, doors, and lights before leaving is essential.

In the absence of other custodial staff during second shift, securing the entire building is required. Additional tasks may include removing marks and graffiti, performing recycling duties, and responding to emergencies appropriately.


Equipment Utilization:

The role requires the use of various hand tools and power equipment, such as brooms, mops, floor cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, snow removal equipment, and other maintenance tools. Familiarity with SMART boards and iPads, as well as basic office equipment like computers and copiers, is necessary. Compliance with company guidelines for equipment use is mandatory.


Travel Requirements:
Limited travel between schools and central offices may be necessary.

Physical and Mental Demands:

The position requires the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow. Exposure to cleaning chemicals and other materials is common. Candidates must meet the Physical Capacity Profile (PCP) requirements, which include climbing stairs and/or ladders, lifting weights ranging from 10 to 100 pounds, and performing various physical tasks such as bending, reaching, and pushing.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential for interaction with colleagues and supervisors. The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, plan and prioritize tasks, and maintain professionalism is crucial. Understanding the company's mission and goals, as well as knowledge of safety standards and mechanical operations, is important.


Interpersonal Relations:

This role involves contact with district personnel, customers, and vendors. Working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor is expected, and the ability to handle diverse situations with tact and diplomacy is necessary. A positive attitude and responsiveness to customer needs are essential.


Employee Expectations:

To ensure effective school operations, employees are expected to fulfill all assigned duties and adhere to scheduled hours. Any deviations must be approved in advance. Professional appearance and conduct that reflect positively on the organization are required.


Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with completion of a Custodial Operations proficiency certificate. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt.
