Senior Laboratory Technician Supervisor

Summary:
The Senior Laboratory Technician Supervisor is responsible for executing all laboratory assistant functions, including but not limited to specimen collection, client interaction, and overseeing laboratory personnel. This role ensures that patient care standards are upheld under the guidance of the designated leader. The supervisor will also manage inventory, monitor laboratory supplies, and assist in various testing and processing tasks across all laboratory sectors.

• Deliver exceptional customer service while adhering to AIDET principles and behavioral standards.
• Provide training and conduct competency assessments for all laboratory assistants and phlebotomists.
• Oversee the collection report, troubleshoot issues, and complete necessary documentation and computer tasks.
• Operate centrifuges and ensure the proper preparation of serum and blood specimens; facilitate the referral of specimens to external laboratories and manage blood product distribution under the supervision of a medical technologist.
• Continuously monitor the collection area to ensure timely specimen collection and assist phlebotomists as needed.
• Address inquiries and resolve issues that arise within the laboratory and between departments, maintaining a professional demeanor and providing excellent service. Greet all clients, patients, and visitors, whether in person or via phone, and respond accurately and courteously to technical inquiries and results requests from healthcare professionals.
• Communicate follow-up information regarding patient care or physician-related concerns to the appropriate supervisory personnel.
• Perform clerical duties, client processing, and customer service tasks as required.
• Enter orders and cancellations into the Hospital Laboratory Information System (LIS). Receive and process collected specimens and distribute them to the relevant departments.
• Maintain laboratory records and reports; ensure completion of chart print rounds and process reports for health information, including faxes or mailings as requested by healthcare providers or clients. Resolve pending transactions and maintain office equipment.
• Initiate specimen collections within the designated response time and monitor pending collections. Report and resolve issues, completing related documentation and computer tasks.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure all patient-related testing and reporting is completed efficiently, regardless of individual assignments, to provide timely results daily. Complete tasks or special projects within established timelines as directed by laboratory supervisory staff.
• Manage inventory control by monitoring supply levels, distributing supplies, restocking, and processing packing slips. Notify supervisors when supplies or reagents reach reorder levels, date reagents upon receipt and opening, and inform supervisors of any expired materials. Complete supply orders as assigned.
• Adhere to safety, infection control, and security protocols as outlined in departmental policies. Follow all safety and infection control procedures, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for assigned tasks, and dispose of biohazardous materials according to established guidelines. Maintain confidentiality of all patient information, including laboratory results, limiting access to healthcare professionals involved in patient care.
• Demonstrate flexibility in work scheduling by willingly rotating shifts and adapting to changing assignments as necessary.
Qualifications:
Education and Skills
- Associate of Science Degree is required.
- Bachelor of Science Degree is preferred.
- Fundamental knowledge in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and biochemistry related to infectious diseases is required.
Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a clinical laboratory environment is required.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
- Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) is required.
- State licensure is required in accordance with local regulations.
