Overview:


This role fulfills the essential CLIA qualifications for a Laboratory Operations Supervisor. Under the guidance of the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, this position is responsible for overseeing and managing the daily functions of specific laboratory sections and shifts.

The Laboratory Supervisor plays a key administrative role with direct reports and operates in an exempt pay status.

In collaboration with the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, this position is tasked with developing and implementing new methodologies, equipment, quality assurance protocols, and reagent usage.

This role also entails the formulation and upkeep of policies and procedures that comply with regulatory standards while fostering service quality enhancements.

The Laboratory Supervisor ensures accountability among personnel through regular performance evaluations and aids in the orientation and skill development of staff within their designated sections.


Key Responsibilities:
Meets the expectations of the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
Responsible for the daily supervision of laboratory personnel performing tests of varying complexities.

Must be readily available to provide on-site, telephonic, or electronic support to resolve technical issues in line with established laboratory protocols.

Ensures adherence to all relevant policies, procedures, and standards as mandated by state and federal agencies, the healthcare facility, and other regulatory bodies such as CLIA, TJC, CAP, AABB, etc.

Plans, organizes, and coordinates the workflow of assigned sections and shifts.
Maintains accurate attendance records for all staff; oversees time and attendance documentation for the department.
Assists the Director/Manager in managing the Laboratory budget, including monthly expense analysis and variance reporting.
Supports the Director/Manager in performance discussions that influence merit increases.

Develops, implements, and maintains up-to-date procedural manuals for all tests conducted in the assigned sections, reviewing and updating these manuals biennially or as needed.

Enforces all safety regulations and protocols.
Researches, assesses, and implements innovative procedures, methodologies, equipment, and techniques as directed by the Director/Manager or Supervisor.
Establishes a relevant section-specific Quality Control Program and maintains all necessary Quality Control and Functional Verification documentation.
Monitors test analyses and specimen evaluations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performance are consistently met.

Reviews the work performed by technologists/technicians in the assigned sections or shifts to minimize errors and corrective actions, prioritizing patient care.

Refers clinical issues to the laboratory director, manager, or supervisor as appropriate.
Ensures that all corrective measures are enacted whenever test systems deviate from established performance criteria.

Guarantees that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been executed and the test system is functioning correctly.

Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots all equipment in assigned sections to ensure optimal performance; conducts minor repairs and adjustments as necessary; coordinates with Biomedical Engineering/equipment manufacturers for safety inspections and repairs; schedules preventive maintenance with Biomedical Engineering, equipment manufacturers, or external contractors.

Prepares and submits routine or special administrative and technical reports by designated deadlines as required, requested, or assigned.

Orders and manages inventories for all essential supplies and reagents in assigned sections to ensure an adequate stock is always available.

Trains new technologists and technicians on procedures and policies specific to the assigned sections and provides ongoing training for new or revised procedures and techniques for assigned shifts or remedial training as necessary.

Responsible for maintaining orientation records for new staff.

Assists the Director/Manager in designing, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data, and reporting all aspects of a comprehensive performance improvement program that engages laboratory personnel in Performance Improvement initiatives.

Conducts in-service education sessions, either formally or informally, for assigned sections and shifts.
Provides input on personnel matters including hiring, termination, transfers, interviews, disciplinary actions, etc.; counsels and documents technical deficiencies.

Performs skills assessments and competency evaluations, maintaining appropriate documentation for all technical staff as delegated by the Laboratory Manager/Director.

Oversees and enforces performance expectations for personnel in assigned sections.
Participates in proficiency testing surveys; reviews and evaluates results, maintaining copies of survey records within sections.
Coordinates and attends meetings as necessary to discuss changes and developments related to policies, equipment, procedures, staffing, etc.
Utilizes and possesses a thorough understanding of the Laboratory Information System and its applications.

Demonstrates the competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the specific and developmental needs of the patient population served by the department.

Adapts patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient served.

Processes patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution, while being mindful of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (when required).

Performs all routine and complex laboratory procedures in the primary section to which assigned, considering age (pediatric) or sex-specific values.

Provides notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained.
Calculates, enters, and/or verifies results of laboratory procedures.

Conducts all duties in a manner that safeguards patient confidentiality and refrains from soliciting or disclosing any confidential information unless necessary for job performance.

Stays informed about advancements in Medical Technology by reading journals, texts, and technical bulletins; attending workshops and seminars; and becoming active in local professional associations.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from a regionally accredited college/university

or Education evaluated by an acceptable credentialing agency and deemed equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology
Five (5) years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician required
Five (5) years of full-time primary experience in the specific section of responsibility required

Must provide proof of certification or certification eligibility for MT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA/ASCP), or MT (AAB).

If certification with an expiration date is held, the certification must be kept current.
