This role fulfills the essential qualifications for a Laboratory General Supervisor as per CLIA standards. Under the guidance of the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, the individual will oversee and manage the daily functions of designated sections and shifts within the laboratory. The Laboratory Supervisor operates in an administrative capacity with direct reports and is classified as an exempt employee. Collaborating with the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, this position is responsible for the creation and execution of new protocols, equipment usage, quality assurance, and reagent management. Additionally, the Supervisor is tasked with developing and upholding policies and procedures that align with regulatory standards while driving service quality enhancements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Exemplifies the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Provides daily oversight of testing activities across various complexity levels performed by laboratory personnel.
- Available to resolve technical issues through on-site, telephonic, or electronic communication with staff during testing hours, adhering to established laboratory protocols.
- Ensures adherence to all relevant policies, procedures, and standards set forth by regulatory bodies, the healthcare facility, and other governing organizations.
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates the operational activities of assigned sections and shifts.
- Maintains accurate attendance records for all team members and oversees departmental timekeeping.
- Assists the Director/Manager in managing the laboratory budget, including monthly financial analysis and reporting.
- Supports the Director/Manager in performance evaluations that influence merit-based salary adjustments.
- Develops, implements, and regularly updates procedural manuals for all tests conducted in assigned sections, ensuring compliance with review schedules.
- Enforces safety protocols and procedures rigorously.
- Researches, assesses, and integrates new methodologies, technologies, and techniques as directed by leadership.
- Establishes and maintains a robust Quality Control Program specific to the section and/or shift, ensuring all records are accurately kept.
- Monitors testing processes and specimen evaluations to uphold high standards of analytical performance, addressing any discrepancies promptly.
- Ensures that all corrective measures are executed when testing systems deviate from established performance criteria.
- Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment, coordinating necessary repairs and preventive maintenance.
- Prepares and submits routine and specialized reports as required.
- Manages inventory for all essential supplies and reagents, ensuring availability at all times.
- Trains new staff on section-specific procedures and policies, providing ongoing education on updates and revisions.
- Assists in the design and implementation of performance improvement initiatives involving laboratory personnel.
- Conducts educational sessions for assigned sections and shifts.
- Participates in personnel-related decisions, including hiring, disciplinary actions, and performance documentation.
- Conducts competency assessments and maintains documentation for all technical staff as delegated.
- Oversees and enforces performance expectations for team members in assigned sections.
- Engages in proficiency testing and maintains records of results.
- Coordinates and participates in meetings to discuss policy changes, equipment updates, and staffing matters.
- Utilizes the Laboratory Information System effectively and demonstrates proficiency in its applications.
- Exhibits the ability to perform patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the diverse needs of the patient population served.
- Adapts patient assessment and care methods to accommodate individual patient needs.
- Processes patient specimens with attention to detail, including collection and handling.
- Performs all laboratory procedures accurately, considering age and sex-specific values.
- Documents and communicates critical laboratory results appropriately.
- Calculates, enters, and verifies laboratory results with precision.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to ethical standards in all duties.
- Stays informed on advancements in Medical Technology through continuous education and professional development.
- Demonstrates commitment to the core values of the organization.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field from an accredited institution.
- Equivalent education evaluated by a recognized credentialing agency may also be considered.
Experience:
- A minimum of five years of experience in a laboratory setting as a Medical Technologist or equivalent role.
- At least five years of direct experience in the specific area of responsibility.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
- Certification or eligibility for certification in relevant laboratory disciplines is required.
- Current certification must be maintained if applicable.
