Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist I is responsible for conducting diagnostic tests in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, this position involves clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks essential for the laboratory's daily functions, including the provision of blood products as required by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Demonstrates the company’s philosophy and core values in all customer interactions.
  • Specimen Collection and Management – collects blood samples through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; manages pneumatic tube systems; follows protocols for specimen processing and testing, including the operation of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient samples as outlined in procedural manuals.
  • Results Management – identifies discrepancies or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values in accordance with established policies; conducts tests within designated timeframes; performs laboratory analyses in sections such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established guidelines.
  • Quality Control – conducts, evaluates, and documents quality control measures in compliance with Policy & Procedure, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; tracks and reports Performance Improvement metrics.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting – performs routine and periodic preventative maintenance with appropriate documentation; addresses minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.
  • Professional Development – takes initiative for personal and professional growth through continued education.
  • Training – assists in the onboarding and training of new staff and students in laboratory protocols.
  • Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.
  • Information Systems – utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.
  • Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency evaluations by the designated deadline.
Qualifications:

Education:
Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations:
A) Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and currently holding the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist; OR
B) 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours in science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours in any combination of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology; AND
C) Laboratory training that includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

Experience:
No prior experience is required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program, or
• Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

Licenses and Certifications:
State licensure is required in Louisiana.
New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
