Job Overview

The In-Space Mechanisms Systems Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting the JETS II initiative. This position requires a seasoned expert in in-space mechanisms, contributing to the mechanisms system management team.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee systems engineering and management of in-space mechanisms for various programs, including the International Space Station and Commercial Crew Program. Responsibilities include management of:
    • Mechanism integration
    • Separation mechanisms
    • Latching mechanisms
    • Flight crew-operated mechanisms
  • Facilitate collaboration among diverse engineering teams across NASA and contractors throughout the hardware development lifecycle.
  • Engage with other systems and subsystems to ensure mission success, crew safety, and overall vehicle integrity and performance.
  • Prepare and present information as necessary to program technical and programmatic leadership.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

This position is advertised at multiple levels, and candidates will be considered based on their experience and qualifications.

  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status is required due to the sensitivity of customer-related information.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering preferred) is necessary.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is required. Licenses and certifications may be necessary.
  • Experience in NASA or aerospace mechanical design is essential.
  • Proven experience in human spaceflight hardware design is required.
  • Experience with mechanisms or robotics is mandatory.
  • Comfortable presenting to technical review boards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with NASA flight hardware requirements generation, validation, and verification processes.
  • Experience in aerospace separation systems design, development, and flight certification.
  • Background in mechanical design, development, and flight certification.
  • Knowledge of NASA-STD-5017 application to complex mechanical systems.
  • Understanding of NASA's approach to fault tolerance and design risk mitigation.
  • Experience performing dimensional tolerance analyses, including thermal effects and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with NASA's system management oversight model.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • A decade of experience in space mechanisms is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position requires onsite presence.
  • Offers a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.
  • Some travel may be necessary.

BACKGROUND CHECKS:

All employees must successfully pass a national agency check, with some positions requiring additional clearance and extensive background verification.


DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING:

All employees must pass a pre-employment drug screening; some contracts necessitate participation in periodic random drug and alcohol testing.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Team collaboration is essential for all employees.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders are necessary.
  • Adherence to company processes, goals, and objectives is expected.
  • A strong work ethic and commitment to safety culture are vital.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are required.
  • Work may involve both office and field environments depending on tasks.
  • Ability to work extended periods while sitting or standing is necessary.
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs occasionally.
  • Regular attendance according to an established schedule is critical.
  • Flexibility to adjust work hours to meet peak demands is required.
