The In-Space Mechanisms Systems Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting advanced aerospace projects. This position is designed for a key subject matter expert in the field of in-space mechanisms, contributing to the mechanisms system management team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee systems engineering and management of in-space mechanisms, ensuring effective subsystem management of:
    • Mechanism integration
    • Separation mechanisms
    • Latching mechanisms
    • Flight crew-operated mechanisms
  • Facilitate collaboration among multi-disciplinary engineering teams across various organizations throughout the hardware development lifecycle.
  • Engage with other systems and subsystems to guarantee mission success, crew safety, and overall vehicle performance.
  • Prepare and present information as necessary to technical and programmatic leadership.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

This position is available at multiple levels based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status is required due to the sensitive nature of the information involved.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is required. Licenses and certifications may be necessary.
  • Experience in NASA or aerospace mechanical design.
  • Background in human spaceflight hardware design.
  • Experience with mechanisms or robotics is essential.
  • Ability to present effectively to engineering review boards.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiarity with NASA flight hardware requirements generation, validation, and verification processes.
  • Experience in the design, development, and flight certification of aerospace separation systems.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design, development, and flight certification.
  • Knowledge of NASA-STD-5017 and its application to complex mechanical systems.
  • Understanding of NASA's approach to fault tolerance and design risk mitigation.
  • Experience in performing dimensional tolerance analyses, including thermal effects and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with NASA's system management oversight model.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • A decade of experience in space mechanisms is highly desirable.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • This position requires onsite presence.
  • Offers a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.
  • Some travel may be necessary.
BACKGROUND CHECKS:

All employees must successfully pass a national agency check, with some positions requiring additional clearance and an extensive background verification process.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING:

All employees must pass a pre-employment drug screening; certain contracts may necessitate participation in random drug and alcohol screening programs.
