Role Overview:

The Component Engineer is responsible for the sourcing, selection, and qualification of components utilized in the organization's technology. This role involves investigating alternative component technologies or suppliers to enhance cost efficiency while improving quality and reliability. The Component Engineer serves as the technical liaison between component suppliers and development engineers, facilitating the identification of new and alternative sources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead initiatives with suppliers to enhance supply chain performance and manufacturing processes, ensuring adherence to supplier excellence standards through best practices in project management, Six Sigma, Lean methodologies, and negotiation techniques.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate processes and suppliers for components, considering long-term compatibility and total cost of ownership.
  • Complete necessary project and part qualification deliverables, including Supplier pFMEA, Process Validations (IQ/OQ/PQ), Inspection Reports, Gage R&R, and Process Capability Analysis.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to implement cost reduction strategies, improve capacity, and mitigate risks.
  • Oversee supplier modifications, including changes in manufacturing processes, production optimization, facility alterations, new equipment qualifications, and new line validations.
  • Manage changes to specifications and drawings through the engineering change order process, ensuring requirements are updated as necessary.
  • Address supplier variances from identification through root cause analysis to corrective action, maintaining thorough CAPA/SCAR documentation.
  • Effectively prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects and tasks, ensuring clear communication of project status to stakeholders.
  • Develop and pursue a strategic vision for supplier development, generating key performance metrics for the team and suppliers.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience; advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in engineering and manufacturing.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Supplier Management and Development.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in resolving complex technical and process challenges.
  • Experience in Medical Device manufacturing is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with the manufacture and/or design of machined metal components, metal injection molding, stamping, and welding.
  • Strong understanding of materials in relation to design and manufacturability is preferred.
  • Experience with plastic injection molded components is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings and communicate technical information effectively.
  • Proficient in computer applications including Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and ERP Information Systems, preferably SAP and Agile.
  • A strong sense of purpose combined with a proven ability to execute tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential.
