Washington, United States AFRICAN PARKS FOUNDATION OF AMERICA Full time

Job Title: Conservation Funding Coordinator

Organization: African Parks Foundation of America

Location: Washington, DC

Reporting to: Executive Director, African Parks Foundation of America

Position Type: Full Time

About African Parks Foundation of America:

African Parks Foundation of America (APFA) is a non-profit organization committed to the conservation and sustainable management of Africa's national parks and protected areas. APFA plays a crucial role in raising and distributing funds to the African Parks Network.

African Parks Network (APN) is a leading conservation organization based in South Africa, collaborating with governments and local communities to rehabilitate and manage national parks and protected areas across Africa. Currently, APN oversees 22 protected areas, encompassing 20 million hectares (50 million acres) across 12 countries. These areas include some of Africa's most significant and renowned parks, such as Kafue in Zambia, Odzala-Kokoua in West Africa, and the Bazaruto Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

AP secures long-term agreements with national governments to safeguard these parks, offering comprehensive programs that include biodiversity conservation, community development, and revenue generation, supported by infrastructure development and effective management.

With remarkable growth in recent years, African Parks employs 5,400 staff members, 98% of whom are local, and operates with a budget exceeding $130 million. This budget is expected to grow as AP fulfills its vision of securing and valuing 30% of Africa's ecosystems and their unique biodiversity indefinitely.

The global funding team at African Parks comprises various independent fundraising units, including the African Parks Foundation of America, several European fundraising entities, a team in Asia Pacific, and specialized teams for institutional funding and Nature-Based Solutions. Their primary responsibility is to generate sufficient funding to support APN's operations and growth strategies. Funding sources include major private donors, institutional donors (e.g., European Union, US Government, German Government), foundations, conservation organizations, and increasingly, corporate partnerships. The organization maintains strong relationships with key donors, many of whom are long-term supporters of African Parks. The Proposals, Impact Reporting and Analysis Team (PIRATE) serves as the backbone of AP's funding operations, bridging the gap between fundraising entities and park operations.

Job Summary:

The African Parks Foundation of America (APFA) is seeking a Conservation Funding Coordinator to assist in managing the entire lifecycle of grant projects with a keen eye for detail and exceptional project management capabilities. This role will be integrated into the Proposal, Impact Reporting and Analysis Team (PIRATE), with team members located across the United States, Europe, and Africa. We are looking for a skilled and experienced writer who is comfortable supporting the development of funding proposals and impact reports. The ideal candidate should have experience and interest in topics such as conservation management, ecosystem functioning, community development, social development issues, sustainable land use, and climate change adaptation. A solid understanding of the funding landscape and priorities related to these themes is highly desirable.

First and foremost, this position requires strong technical skills in developing budgets, logical frameworks, and monitoring and evaluation frameworks utilized by major institutional funders, including the US Government and prominent private foundations.

As a liaison between the fundraising teams and park teams, strong candidates will possess a service-oriented mindset, eager to understand the objectives and needs of fundraisers while helping to package information from the parks into compelling presentations and insightful reports. Additionally, strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for engaging with park-based Funding and Reporting Managers (FRMs) and other park staff to provide accurate and timely input into reports and proposals, while being sensitive to the realities of remote protected areas.

Key Responsibilities:

· Assist fundraising account managers and park teams in overseeing grant-funded projects, including timeline management, budget tracking, and resource allocation;

· Contribute to the development of rigorous proposals and impact reports, ensuring accurate and precise grant budgets, quality financial reports, and compliance with grant requirements and regulations. This includes collaborating with experts across the organization and refining content provided by program team members for accuracy and clarity;

· Create concept notes, factsheets, case studies, and position papers based on the needs identified by the fundraising team and input from other African Parks departments;

· Compile risk assessments and facilitate go/no-go decisions on significant, restricted opportunities;

· Coordinate with project teams, particularly the Funding and Reporting Managers (FRMs) in the parks, to align donor priorities and restrictions with the strategic needs and planned interventions of the park;

· Support in-park FRMs with grant management and compliant grant delivery through workshops, regular check-ins, and troubleshooting;

Competencies, Qualifications, and Experience Needed for the Role:

· Proven experience in grants management of philanthropic and/or institutional funding, supporting the development of proposals, budgets, and reports aligned with donor interests and requirements;

· Strong understanding of monitoring & evaluation frameworks, theories of change, and logical frameworks, with the ability to manage complex budgets and impact data;

· Effective communication skills and experience in facilitating diverse stakeholders, quickly grasping the needs of fundraising and how they intersect with the realities of African Parks;

· Excellent English writing and storytelling skills; fluency and strong writing skills in French would be a significant advantage;

· Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage multiple deadlines while maintaining and enhancing African Parks' quality standards;

· Willingness to travel to remote protected areas and the African Parks Home Office;

· A Master's degree is preferred in a relevant field such as International Development, Environmental Studies, Social Sciences, Conservation, Ecology, Biology, or International Relations;

· A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in grant management, conservation, social development, and/or sustainable land use management in a developing country context.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates should submit a resume and a cover letter.

Note: This position will remain open until filled. African Parks Foundation of America is an equal-opportunity employer.
