Position Overview: The Burlington School District is in search of an Educational Support Specialist. Under the guidance of a designated supervisor, this role involves assisting a certified educator in delivering instruction to individuals or small groups within a specific educational program. Responsibilities include helping students achieve the objectives outlined in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP), attending to their physical and health needs, monitoring and reporting on student progress, and performing various clerical and supportive tasks related to classroom activities and management.

Key Responsibilities:

Support Student Development:
  1. Encourage student participation in activities by posing open-ended questions and suggesting enhancements to their work.
  2. Promote language skills by articulating the activities of both students and adults during tasks.
  3. Implement positive behavior management strategies.
  4. Understand the motivations and behaviors of young adults.

Collaborate with Educational Team:
  1. Assist professional staff in supervising students in various settings.
  2. Support the preparation and organization of classroom materials for daily activities.
  3. Help in the collection and documentation of educational data.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum Requirement: At least two years of post-secondary education or successful completion of the Praxis exam.
  • Preferred: Coursework in relevant fields such as psychology, education, or human development; an Associate or Bachelor's degree.

Experience:
  • Preferred: Experience working with young adults with special needs.

Working Conditions:
  1. Typical work environments include classrooms, offices, outdoor settings, and community preschools.
  2. Occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  3. Ability to manage varying noise levels.
  4. Physical capability to safely assist students as needed.

Qualifications Summary:

Applicants should possess a high school diploma along with at least two years of additional education, and a minimum of two years of experience in education or a related field. Effective and respectful communication with students, parents, and school personnel is essential.

Compensation:

Salary is determined in accordance with the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Paraeducators of the Burlington School District. Additional compensation is provided for hours worked directly with intensive special needs students.

Benefits:

Health and life insurance benefits are available after a designated period of employment. Dental benefits are accessible after one full year of service.
