Job Overview

Under general supervision, this position involves performing complex and significant professional tasks in planning, organizing, and overseeing the operations of a probation unit within the Juvenile Probation Department.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Directly supervises probation officers, administrative staff, and volunteers within the unit by overseeing planning, organizing, and reviewing their work; monitoring job performance; resolving conflicts; and ensuring high standards of work quality and quantity.

2. Provides training and development for staff through effective teaching methods; offers guidance on laws, policies, and procedures related to agency operations; and clarifies casework techniques and report writing.

3. Engages with community organizations and other city departments to exchange information regarding departmental policies and procedures, fostering positive community relations.

4. Assesses and monitors residential and non-residential programs utilized by the Juvenile Probation Department for suitable client placements.

5. Prepares and presents oral reports on unit operations to various boards, commissions, and city departments.

6. Generates written reports on unit operations, including performance evaluations and statistical data on clients served.

7. Oversees the scheduling and coordination of transportation for clients, ensuring appropriate security measures are in place.

8. May assist in conducting background checks on new hires in accordance with departmental policies.

9. May lead investigations of incidents involving staff and clients, conducting interviews and formal inquiries.

10. May contribute to the annual budget development by providing relevant cost and resource information.

11. May assist in policy formulation by participating in administrative meetings and acting as a liaison between staff and management.

12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in social sciences or a related field.

Experience: A minimum of four years of full-time experience as a probation officer within the criminal justice system, including at least two years working with juvenile offenders.

Desirable Skills:

Knowledge of juvenile probation service principles, evidence-based practices, interview techniques, and employee supervision methods.

Ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations, manage conflicts, and implement new policies and procedures.
