Position Overview:

This part-time role is designed for a clinic setting, with hours scheduled during a standard office week, excluding weekends.

At Houston Methodist, the Lead Medical Assistant is tasked with demonstrating expert knowledge and proficiency in advanced examinations and treatments. This role involves effectively communicating and executing delegated medical assistant tasks under the direct supervision of a Physician or Registered Nurse for designated patient groups, ensuring high-quality patient care and service support. The Lead Medical Assistant also oversees the appropriate scope of practice, including roles such as Hand Hygiene Validator and EMR super-user. Responsibilities include assisting with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes, along with performing essential administrative duties in compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, and governmental regulations, as well as internal policies.

  • Exemplifies and fosters a positive work environment, collaborating with the interprofessional care team to achieve optimal departmental outcomes. Takes initiative in problem-solving within the work unit and facilitates teamwork by anticipating needs and responding positively to requests for assistance.
  • Engages with all members of the healthcare team, actively communicating and reporting relevant patient care information comprehensively. Encourages critical thinking among peers by articulating the rationale behind decisions and maintaining consistent follow-up.
  • Independently fulfills the duties of a preceptor, serving as a clinical resource within the department, utilizing advanced skills to guide and mentor colleagues in delivering optimal patient care.

Patient Care Responsibilities:

  • Provides care to patients visiting the clinic under the supervision of a Physician or Registered Nurse, employing principles of cultural diversity and inclusion. Completes pre-visit planning workflows whenever feasible, including gathering necessary documentation.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs, chief complaints, and conducting medication reviews while discussing medical and social histories as appropriate. Ensures accurate documentation in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Follows up with patients to ensure adherence to recommendations, medications, lab results, and appointments, promoting the utilization of patient engagement tools.
  • Coordinates care with hospitals, emergency departments, consulting physicians, and community resources as needed, addressing patient inquiries effectively.
  • Models behaviors and skills that enhance patient satisfaction scores through peer accountability.

Quality and Safety Responsibilities:

  • Reports patient observations and conditions to the supervising physician or nurse, recognizing and appropriately reporting abnormal clinical findings while ensuring patient privacy and safety.
  • Accurately performs routine tests such as EKGs, rapid strep tests, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests.
  • Maintains cleanliness and sterilization of instruments and equipment, ensuring exam and treatment rooms are prepared and stocked appropriately.

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes resources efficiently, minimizing waste and managing inventory of exam room supplies.
  • Demonstrates self-motivation in managing time effectively and prioritizing tasks to reduce incidental overtime.

  • Facilitates the skill development of team members, actively participating in professional growth and educational activities at the departmental level.
  • Contributes innovative solutions through involvement in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Regularly updates personal development plans to reflect ongoing growth.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of experience as a medical assistant, particularly in complex chronic disease management or specialty disciplines.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Required: RMA, CMA, or equivalent certification from an accredited agency.
  • Preferred: CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to perform assigned duties safely and effectively.
  • Proficient in English, both spoken and written, to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, medical staff, and colleagues, maintaining a customer service focus.
  • Knowledgeable in medical practices and patient care, with the ability to assist in examinations and treatment procedures.
  • Proficient in computer skills for documentation and work-related tasks.

Work Environment:

  • Uniform and scrubs are required.
  • May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area.
