Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in surgical technology

JOB SUMMARY
The Lead Surgical Technologist delivers expert technical support to the surgical team before, during, and after surgical procedures. This role involves providing critical assistance in surgical operations under the guidance of surgeons and registered nurses, ensuring the safe and effective execution of invasive surgical interventions. The Lead Surgical Technologist is responsible for maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring all equipment is functional, and that procedures are conducted under optimal conditions to maximize patient safety.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Verifies supplies and equipment necessary for surgical procedures.
  • Prepares by scrubbing in a prescribed manner and donning sterile attire.
  • Assists in gowning and gloving surgeons and surgical assistants.
  • Conducts sponge, needle, and instrument counts accurately.
  • Aids in patient positioning, skin preparation, and draping.
  • Passes instruments to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Upholds the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the operation.
  • Assists with postoperative dressing applications.
  • Cleans and prepares surgical instruments for sterilization.
  • Maintains accountability for tray inventory following each surgical case.
  • Collaborates with the circulator or scrub personnel across various specialties.
  • Works with the service coordinator to submit purchase orders for specialty supplies.


  • Oversees and manages specialty supply inventory.
  • Aids in the training of students and new staff members.
  • Assists in transferring patients between the operating table and stretcher.
  • Prepares the Surgical Operating Suite for subsequent operations.
  • Adheres to processes that enhance Surgical Operating Suite efficiency, including First Case Starts and Case Turnover times.


  • Supports the implementation of new programs and updates surgeon preference cards.
  • Proficiently scrubs in across multiple surgical specialties.
  • Actively participates in team building and staff retention efforts within designated surgical services.
  • Identifies personal and team learning needs; sets ambitious yet achievable goals and creates learning opportunities to fulfill those goals.


  • Exhibits compassion and understanding towards patients and colleagues.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor, both verbally and non-verbally.
