Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Berks County Sheriff's Department is seeking a dedicated Law Enforcement Officer to ensure the safety and security of the citizens within the County and to uphold the integrity of its Judicial System. This role encompasses a variety of general duty tasks within the Sheriff's Office and may involve assignments across different divisions or specialized roles.

Responsibilities are carried out in compliance with state laws and departmental regulations. The Law Enforcement Officer must demonstrate initiative and sound judgment in emergency situations, recognizing that some tasks may present personal risk.

This position is integral to law enforcement and necessitates advanced education, training, and/or relevant experience. The Officer is expected to uphold the laws of both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States, along with their respective Constitutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Duties
  • Execute all writs and orders issued by the Court.
  • Conduct levies and manage personal property sales.
  • Facilitate Sheriff Sales.
  • Ensure security within courtrooms.
  • Transport detainees securely.
  • Serve arrest and bench warrants.
  • Deliver Protection from Abuse orders, including the seizure of weapons.
  • Manage detainees in holding areas and during transport.
  • Escort detainees to and from court.
  • Assess firearm applications for dealers and permits for carrying firearms.
  • Provide security for detainees outside of correctional facilities.
  • Enforce court directives.
  • Serve injunctions and maintain order during strikes.
  • Process legal documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Communicate with attorneys, defendants, and other relevant parties.
  • Safeguard property.
  • Post notifications for Sheriff and Tax Sales.
  • Travel for extradition purposes both within and outside the state.
  • Assist law enforcement at various incidents and in court settings.
  • Uphold criminal and vehicle codes.
  • Issue permits for carrying firearms and perform related duties.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and reports promptly and professionally.
  • Represent the department at community events while maintaining professionalism.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. from an accredited institution.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and a U.S. citizen.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license; willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver's License as required.
  • Successful completion of a thorough background check and interview process; no prior or pending criminal history.
  • Must obtain a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of Deputy Sheriff's training standards as mandated by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, along with all training set forth by the Berks County Sheriff's Office.
  • Successful completion of the state-mandated 19-week Deputy Sheriff's Basic Training Academy within one year of hire.
  • If previously certified under Pennsylvania Act 120, completion of the required waiver training.
  • Ongoing training every 24 months to maintain Act 2 certification.
  • Certification in TASER use and re-certifications as required.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with department firearms under varying conditions.
  • Maintain a Class C Commercial Driver's License with a P endorsement.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Essential Competencies
  • Perform all duties effectively while adhering to departmental policies.
  • Achieve and maintain JNET certification.
  • Conduct warrant searches using available technology.
  • Operate standard office equipment and software.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, demonstrating strong communication skills.
  • Learn to operate Mobile Computer Terminals (MCTs) in law enforcement vehicles.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies on related tasks.
  • Follow established policies and procedures.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Interact positively with the public while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Transport detainees to various facilities safely.
  • Conduct searches of detainees and their belongings, as well as inspections of holding areas.
  • Collect fines and issue receipts when necessary.
  • Provide security during court proceedings to ensure a safe environment for all involved.
  • Utilize restraint equipment appropriately when necessary.
  • Safely operate department vehicles, including during emergencies.
  • Facilitate property sales and evictions as required.
  • Complete citations and legal documents accurately.
  • Testify in civil and criminal court proceedings as needed.
  • Recall and document details accurately and clearly.
  • Understand and execute both oral and written instructions.
  • Exhibit tact, courtesy, and sound judgment in all interactions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed in both office settings and field environments, exposing the employee to various weather conditions. The individual must possess the ability to communicate effectively with the public and have the physical capability to apprehend and restrain offenders. Physical tasks may include climbing, running, bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • Employees may encounter physical hazards, including aggressive individuals and exposure to various environmental risks. Work is conducted in diverse weather conditions.
  • The role may require overtime and flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays.
