The primary objective of this role is to assess and underwrite new business and renewals profitably, adhering to authority levels and established protocols, while leading initiatives that impact the organization. You will manage larger, more significant, and complex accounts. Employ underwriting tools to accurately classify risks, determine rates, and establish premium charges. Familiarity with state regulations, including cancellation and non-renewal policies, is essential for conducting business effectively within your designated territory. You should possess in-depth knowledge of coverage forms and policy language, ensuring appropriate use of forms and exclusions. Assist in resolving premium audit disputes with assigned agents or brokers. You will be regarded as an authority in a specific product area and will have the ability to mentor junior underwriters.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Profitably underwrite and expand a portfolio primarily focused on Miscellaneous E&O business.
  • Select suitable risks in line with underwriting guidelines and strategies, providing constructive terms and conditions for both Markel and our clients.
  • Implement corrective measures or enhancements on renewals as required.
  • Collaborate closely with product line leaders to identify opportunities for improving our products, processes, and strategies.
  • Maintain regular communication with key producers to gather vital market insights and feedback regarding our competitive standing.
  • Develop targeted growth plans aimed at key production opportunities.
  • Serve as a mentor to less experienced underwriters.
  • Engage actively with the professional liability team and leadership to identify cross-selling opportunities and enhance our platform.
What we seek:
  • A four-year college degree is preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in professional liability underwriting (experience with Misc. E&O is advantageous).
  • Exceptional technical and organizational abilities.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven technical knowledge and skills reflecting a progression of responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated relationship-building, marketing, and sales capabilities.
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies to improve outcomes.
  • Availability to travel up to 25%.
  • A positive mindset, eagerness to be an integral part of a team, and enjoyment of your workplace and colleagues.
