Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Operations Manager to join our team at St. Mary's Health System. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the clinical operations of the unit, overseeing patient care functions, and providing leadership and guidance to staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Clinical Manager in achieving organizational and department-specific goals and objectives.
- Provide oversight and supervision of staff, and help hold staff accountable for their performance.
- Collaborate with providers regularly on issues of patient care.
- Assist with research and follow-up of Midas events.
- Assist with unit performance improvement activities and other data collection.
- Assist with employee performance evaluations.
- Assist with the completion of employee stay interviews.
- Take an active role in problem-solving issues.
- Participate actively in unit-based projects and/or workgroups.
- Assist the Manager in maintaining a patient care environment that meets the needs of patients in a cost-effective manner.
Clinical Competency:
- Demonstrate and maintain a high level of clinical competency and sound clinical judgment.
- Consistently adhere to policy and procedure and be proficient in the use of Policy Stat.
- Assist the primary nurse in patient assessment and implementation of nursing interventions and provider orders when needed.
- Respond to and provide clinical leadership in patient emergencies (i.e., codes, rapid response, challenging patients).
Leadership and Professionalism:
- Maintain awareness of current clinical status, safety risks, and psycho-social-emotional needs of patients on the unit; ensure provider orders are carried out on patients.
- Be responsive to the needs of staff; willing and able to assist staff with skills and tasks as needed.
- Delegate tasks to staff appropriately and thoughtfully.
- Maintain situational awareness and re-assign staff workload as necessary.
- Act as an advocate for patients and staff.
- Role model teamwork and positive interactions with others.

- Serve as a change leader on the unit, act as a super-user for new equipment, policies, documentation, and processes.

Communication and Conflict Resolution:

- Manage difficult conversations with staff, patients, and families professionally and empathetically.
- Proactively manage unit dynamics and conflict, gossip, and negativity and role model positive behaviors.
- Escalate issues appropriately to unit leadership and nursing supervision.
- Coordinate and collaborate effectively with staff, hospital leaders, providers, and other departments to facilitate patient flow.
Quality and Safety:
- Observe, address, and provide guidance to staff regarding quality of care, policy, and process concerns (e.g., hand washing, medication administration practices, fall and pressure injury prevention, restraints, bedside handoff, etc.).
- Demonstrate support for hospital patient safety, quality, and education initiatives.
- Facilitate staff attendance at in-services as requested.
- Complete patient rounds every shift.
Other Specific Skills / Inpatient RN:
- Function in the Charge Nurse Role.
- Manage staff assignments appropriately with consideration for patient acuity and staff skill mix. Assign breaks according to the needs of the unit.
- Initiate and lead unit huddles with staff each shift.
- Demonstrate the use of AIDET and hourly rounding and reinforce with staff.
- Perform audits as assigned.
- Proactively manage noise and cleanliness on the unit.
- Maintain awareness of disaster and emergency plans.
- Receive report from outgoing charge nurse and give report to oncoming charge nurse.
- Complete weekly narcotic count in Pyxis and daily review of narcotic administration reports.
- Attend daily multi-disciplinary rounds and take an active leadership role in discharge planning.
Position Specific Competencies:
- Assist Manager with payroll duties.
- Assist Manager with creating and maintaining schedules.
- Provide floor-specific education and organizational updates.
- Create agenda and maintain meeting minutes for staff meetings.
- Collaborate with inpatient and specialty department for staffing needs.
- Collaborate with the administrative assistant to track and maintain employee competencies.
- Maintain yearly competencies i.e. Fit testing and Restraint education to support employee compliance.
- Maintain required certifications i.e. FEMA (CS100).
- Participate in staff interviews as necessary.
