REPORTS TO: Teacher, Site Supervisor, Education Manager, Transportation Manager

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Head Start Class Aide/Transportation Assistant collaborates with the Head Start Bus Driver to ensure safe transportation for children, adhering to all relevant state and local regulations as well as Head Start transportation protocols. This role also involves providing essential support within the Head Start classroom. The Class Aide may serve as a disability aide, offering personalized attention to children with special needs or those requiring extra assistance. The Class Aide will work closely with the teacher and other staff to foster an enriching educational environment for all children enrolled.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with teaching staff to assist with daily operations in the Head Start center.
  • Support children with special needs, as well as other students, during classroom activities, bathroom breaks, mealtimes, outdoor play, and field trips.
  • Help document necessary paperwork for children with special needs.
  • Substitute as a driver when qualified and necessary.
  • Maintain safe driving practices and a positive atmosphere on the bus, providing first aid in case of injuries and managing emergency situations, including vehicle evacuations.
  • Ensure children are never left unattended on the vehicle.
  • Assist children and their guardians during boarding and disembarking from the bus, confirming that a responsible adult is present to receive the child.
  • Oversee all passengers on the vehicle, ensuring that safety restraints are utilized and fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Help keep the vehicle clean and safe.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report any concerns to the Site Supervisor.
  • Adhere to all driving regulations and report any accidents immediately.
  • Maintain required documentation regarding mileage and maintenance costs.
  • Facilitate communication between staff and parents regarding children’s needs and relay messages effectively.
  • Participate in relevant Head Start training sessions and attend meetings as required.
  • Ensure emergency supplies are well-maintained and stored according to agency policies.
  • Work collaboratively with all Head Start personnel.
  • Plan efficient transportation routes, considering weather conditions, and make all designated stops unless otherwise directed.
  • Understand the responsibilities associated with being a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess or obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within six months of hire.
  • Familiarity with program curriculum and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Ability to relate positively to children and parents.
  • Capability to develop and implement classroom activities tailored to individual children's needs.
  • Strong collaboration skills with staff, parents, and management.
  • Knowledge of bus safety regulations and Head Start transportation guidelines.
  • Basic understanding of vehicle maintenance and child development principles.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor that reflects positively on the program.
  • Complete a medical examination and TB assessment within the first month of employment and every five years thereafter.
  • Pass background checks and drug screenings as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, as well as travel on various road types during the transportation of children. Physical demands include lifting up to 55 pounds frequently, climbing into the school bus, and engaging in activities that require standing, bending, kneeling, and squatting.
