REPORTS TO: Teacher, Site Supervisor, Education Manager, Transportation Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Head Start Bus Aide/Class Aide collaborates with the Head Start Bus Driver to ensure safe transportation for children, adhering to all relevant state and local regulations as well as Head Start transportation protocols. This role also involves providing essential daily support within the Head Start classroom. The Class Aide may serve as a disability aide, offering personalized attention to children with special needs or those requiring extra assistance. The Class Aide will work closely with the teacher and teacher aide to foster an educational atmosphere for all children enrolled in the Head Start program.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with teaching staff to assist with daily activities within the Head Start center.
- Support children with special needs and other students in the classroom, aiding during classroom activities, bathroom visits, mealtimes, outdoor play, and field trips.
- Help document necessary paperwork for children with special needs.
- Substitute as a driver when qualified and necessary.
- Maintain safe driving practices and a positive environment on the bus, administering first aid as needed and managing emergency situations, including vehicle evacuations.
- Ensure that children are never left unattended on the vehicle.
- Assist children and their guardians during boarding and disembarking from the bus, confirming that a responsible adult is present to receive the child.
- Oversee all passengers on the vehicle, ensuring the use of safety restraints and promoting a positive atmosphere conducive to learning.
- Help maintain a clean and safe vehicle.
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report any concerns to the Site Supervisor.
- Adhere to all driving regulations at the state, county, and local levels.
- Report any accidents to the supervisor immediately.
- Maintain documentation related to mileage, maintenance costs, and other required records.
- Facilitate communication between staff and parents regarding children, relaying messages and fostering positive interactions.
- Participate in relevant Head Start training and attend meetings as required.
- Ensure emergency supplies are maintained and stored according to agency policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with all Head Start personnel.
- Plan efficient transportation routes, considering weather conditions, and make all designated stops unless otherwise instructed.
- Understand the responsibilities of being a mandated reporter for Child Abuse and Neglect and comply with reporting procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Possess or obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, starting classes within six months of hire.
- Familiarity with program curriculum and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Ability to relate positively to children and parents.
- Skills in developing and implementing classroom activities tailored to children's individual needs.
- Ability to work effectively with other staff, parents, and management.
- Knowledge of bus safety regulations and Head Start transportation guidelines.
- Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge.
- Understanding of child development principles and childcare practices.
- Maintain a professional demeanor that reflects positively on the program.
- Complete initial medical and TB assessments within 30 days of employment and every five years thereafter.
- Pass background checks and drug screenings.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position involves potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, as well as risks associated with travel on various road types during the transportation of children. Physical demands include lifting up to 55 pounds, frequent climbing, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
