ABOUT MTC
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) serves as the transportation planning, financing, and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. MTC is recognized as the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the state designated Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA) for the region.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Environmental Resilience Planner position is situated within the Major Plans unit of the Regional Planning Program. This program is dedicated to applied research and regional planning initiatives for the San Francisco Bay Area, with the Major Plans unit leading the development of long-range planning initiatives. The role will spearhead regional resilience and environmental planning efforts, ensuring the integration of these critical topics into long-term regional strategies.

The Planner will engage collaboratively with various regional agencies and local governments to promote joint resilience and environmental initiatives. Responsibilities include conducting mapping and data analysis, developing technical documentation, and presenting key initiatives to MTC/ABAG committees and boards.

Furthermore, the Planner will contribute to regional efforts addressing challenges such as wildfire, seismic activity, and other natural hazards. Potential initiatives include long-term planning for sea level rise, conservation area implementation, and coordination with local jurisdictions and regional agencies. This position may be filled at either the Assistant or Associate level, depending on qualifications and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Experience with resilience and conservation planning frameworks.
  • Familiarity with long-range planning, including regional plans and climate adaptation strategies.
  • Experience with analytical tools such as ArcGIS and basic database analysis.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and graphic.
  • A collaborative mindset, with experience working on projects involving multiple stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required. A typical pathway includes:

Education: A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as transportation planning, city and regional planning, or public administration. A Master's degree is preferred.

ASSISTANT LEVEL
Experience: One year of relevant experience in transportation planning or related fields.

ASSOCIATE LEVEL
Experience: Two years of relevant experience in transportation planning or related fields.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, public policy, or environmental science is preferred.
