Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Computing Specialist to join our team at the University of Washington. This is a full-time position that will provide computing support to faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for a wide range of computing systems, including PCs, servers, and network infrastructure.
  • Administer and maintain the department's computing infrastructure, including user accounts, group security, and network-layer security.
  • Monitor and maintain system performance, including capacity and load monitoring, and perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Develop and implement new departmental services, and serve as technical lead for implementation and maintenance of some new services.
  • Collaborate with other IT staff to address day-to-day help desk requests and provide direct support to department customers.
  • Develop and maintain durable instructional and reference material to assist faculty, staff, and students in areas such as shell commands and scripting languages.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Sciences, Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, or similar fields.
  • Three years of experience in systems administration, with a focus on Windows Server and Hyper-V administration, multi-user Linux system administration, and experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible.
  • Expertise in network security, including SSL, SSH, and public key cryptography, with AD, Kerberos, Linux/PAM security, and host and network intrusion detection systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot effectively with little supervision, interact effectively and efficiently with a large number of users with diverse needs, and communicate complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six years of relevant experience, with experience configuring and administering systems running in cloud computing environments such as AWS and Azure.
  • Experience with statistical applications, bioinformatics, and biomedical data security/privacy.
  • Ability to use project management tools and techniques, such as Gantt charts, PERT diagrams, and Kanban boards.
