Position Overview

The Coder III role requires expertise in coding complex inpatient accounts and specialized outpatient services, including but not limited to Observation, Radiation Oncology, Chemotherapy Infusion, Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology, and Interventional Radiology and Surgery. This position is essential for achieving Revenue Cycle objectives and ensuring timely billing processes.

Utilizing the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM and PCS), the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), the coder ensures precise coding accuracy.

The role involves a thorough examination of medical records to accurately identify principal and secondary diagnoses, procedures, and any complications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately sequence diagnoses and procedures, maintaining a coding accuracy rate of 95%.
  • Strive for optimal Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) assignments for each coded record, leveraging available computer systems.
  • Maintain consistent performance levels, aligning with departmental productivity targets.
  • Hold accounts appropriately when additional information is needed for accurate coding or DRG assignment, and liaise with relevant staff as necessary.
  • Stay updated with coding literature, new guidelines, and share insights with colleagues based on feedback and supervisory observations.
  • Complete all assigned tasks diligently and reliably as directed by management.
  • Engage in continuing education opportunities, both within and outside the organization.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to achieve departmental goals.
  • Perform all related duties or special projects as assigned.
Experience Requirements

A minimum of 3-5 years of experience is required.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in coding inpatient accounts, as well as ICD-10 and PCS coding, along with complex outpatient coding in areas such as Observation, Radiation Oncology, Chemotherapy Infusion, Surgery, Cardiology Catheterization, Electrophysiology, and/or Interventional Radiology.

Education Requirements

A High School Diploma is required, while an Associate's degree is preferred.

License/Certification Requirements

One or more of the following certifications is required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CIC, COC, CPC, CCA, CCC, CIRCC, CCVTC, or any core or specialty credentials from AAPC or AHIMA.
