Position Overview
Unarmed Security Specialists at The Museum of Flight play a crucial role in the institution's safety and security efforts by safeguarding staff, visitors, property, and the collection from both actual and perceived threats. This position involves patrolling and monitoring the premises, including buildings, grounds, parking areas, exhibits, and collections to prevent damage, vandalism, trespassing, and other potential risks. As a visible member of the Museum team, Security Specialists offer assistance and guidance to guests and visitors. This role requires prompt responses to urgent or emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Observe, identify, deter, and respond to any tampering, vandalism, or theft of Museum artifacts and property.
  2. Conduct regular patrols in assigned interior and exterior locations.
  3. Assist visitors, staff, and vendors by providing information and support.
  4. Enforce relevant Museum safety and security protocols.
  5. React and assist during emergencies (medical, fire, earthquake, evacuations, etc.), which may include providing basic first aid to injured individuals.
  6. Perform routine fire prevention, safety, and security inspections.
  7. Set up and manage crowd-control barriers and stanchions for events and emergencies.
  8. Document and report shift activities and incidents in detail.
  9. Monitor security surveillance and intrusion detection systems.
  10. Control access to restricted areas.
  11. Follow specific procedures for operating exhibit-related equipment.
  12. Assist with inquiries and retrieval of lost and found items.
  13. Provide security and safety support during aircraft movements or fly-ins on Museum property under the guidance of Collections.
  14. Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum one year of experience in a customer service setting such as a museum, educational institution, stadium, amusement park, or similar environment.
  • One year of experience in security or asset management preferred.
Knowledge
  • Basic understanding of security roles within a customer service context.
Skills
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and comfort working with diverse populations.
Abilities
  • Self-motivated to address various priorities that arise during shifts.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers through various channels.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure under pressure.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive security matters discreetly.
  • Experience and knowledge in first aid and CPR preferred.
License & Certification
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

The Museum of Flight Security Department operates 24/7 and includes three primary shifts: day, swing, and night. Flexibility to work any of these shifts, including holidays, and to adjust hours as needed is required. Employees must remain on campus for their entire shift, including meal breaks. This position involves a high level of public interaction, and Security Specialists are required to wear uniforms provided by the Museum.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, climb ladders, and stairs, and occasionally work from elevated platforms.
  • May require outdoor work during inclement weather.
  • Physical movements such as bending, carrying, reaching, pushing, pulling, walking, standing, twisting, and squatting are necessary.
  • May come into contact with various approved chemicals, including cleaning and first aid supplies.
  • Some work may be performed in an office setting, requiring periods of sitting and repetitive wrist and arm movements.

Paid Time Off
Our paid time-off plans include two weeks of accrued sick leave and two weeks of vacation (80 hours each) annually, ten paid holidays, and two floating holidays.

Compensation
The hourly pay range for this position is $20.00 to $24.00, depending on experience, with additional compensation for evening and night shifts.
