Position Overview:

The City of Stanton Internship Program offers an invaluable opportunity for individuals seeking practical experience in the Finance sector. This part-time, training-level role allows for flexible scheduling based on individual availability.

Note: This is a volunteer, unpaid position.

Role Summary:

Under direct supervision, interns will engage in various tasks that support the financial operations of the City. Responsibilities include assisting with financial management, accounting, budgeting, cash handling, business licensing, payroll processing, revenue collection, procurement, and general administrative duties. Interns are expected to commit to a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Gather and analyze data for financial and statistical reports.
  • Process accounts payable, cash receipts, and supply requests.
  • Ensure proper revenue coding, generate reports, and reconcile accounts.
  • Review payable vouchers and purchase orders for accuracy.
  • Assist in the billing process for business licenses.
  • Support special projects related to investments, technology, budgeting, and payroll.
  • Provide assistance and information to the public via in-person and phone interactions.
  • Draft correspondence, forms, and informational materials.
  • Organize and manage documentation, including special mailings.
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions with the public and city officials.
  • Assist the department with various tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong character and leadership qualities.
  • Basic research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Maintain professionalism and courtesy in explaining procedures.
  • Proficient in mathematical calculations.
  • Familiarity with computer operations and software applications.
  • Excellent customer service abilities.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with colleagues and other departments.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma required; current undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate in Finance, Accounting, Business, Management, Public Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • Completion of at least 60 college units, including a Fundamentals of Accounting course.

Licenses:
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid California Class C driver's license.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in an office environment, involving prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and moving.
  • Frequent use of hands and wrists for computer and office equipment operation.
  • Occasional overtime or weekend work may be necessary.
  • Ability to communicate detailed instructions accurately.
  • Average visual acuity for document preparation and review.
