Position Overview

Storm King Art Center is in search of Independent Art Educators to engage with K-12 student groups throughout the upcoming season. This role offers a distinctive chance for students to experience modern and contemporary art while being surrounded by nature. Through inquiry-driven tours, educators will facilitate multi-sensory and interdisciplinary learning experiences.

As a key part of our educational offerings, Independent Art Educators will lead tours that promote close observation and foster a secure and engaging environment for students, teachers, and chaperones to collaboratively explore their thoughts and insights.

With over 10,000 visitors participating in group visits each season and more than 200 guided tours available, this position plays a vital role in our educational mission. School visits are particularly concentrated during specific times of the year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct engaging, inquiry-based, thematic tours for K-12 school groups in the outdoor setting of Storm King Art Center.
  • Deliver tours tailored to the specific needs and interests of each group while aligning with Storm King's educational objectives.
  • Design new routes to accommodate unique requests from visiting groups.
  • Participate in annual training sessions at Storm King Art Center and review resources to prepare for tours.
  • Assist in program evaluation by providing feedback on group visits to Storm King staff as needed.
  • Coordinate with Storm King staff to address practical onsite requirements (e.g., wayfinding, first aid).

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Familiarize yourself with the schedule of groups to effectively guide them onsite as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in a teaching role within a museum environment.
  • Proven experience engaging directly with K-12 audiences.
  • Background in leading inquiry-based discussions or educational sessions.
  • Familiarity with modern and contemporary art.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering inclusion and accessibility.
  • Ability to adapt and respond to varying learning goals.
  • Capability to work independently and address challenges effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Visual Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Education, or a related field, or active involvement in artistic practice with a history of exhibitions.
  • Interest in or knowledge of landscape and ecology.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or American Sign Language is advantageous.
  • CPR/Red Cross First Aid certification is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to navigate outdoor environments in various weather conditions across expansive grounds.
  • Capacity to remain outdoors for extended periods during school visits.
  • Proficiency in using a two-way radio.
  • Frequent standing for prolonged durations.
  • Occasional lifting, bending, or stooping may be required.

COVID-19 Vaccination Policy:

Storm King aims for a fully vaccinated workforce and will consider requests for reasonable accommodations for medical and religious reasons in accordance with applicable laws.

Compensation:

The compensation for this freelance position is $75 per tour, in addition to $30 per hour for meetings and mandatory training sessions. This role does not include benefits beyond those mandated by law.
