Position Overview

Storm King Art Center is seeking Independent Art Educators to engage with K-12 student groups throughout the upcoming season. This role offers a distinctive chance for students to experience modern and contemporary art within a natural setting. Through inquiry-driven tours, educators will facilitate opportunities for multi-sensory and interdisciplinary learning.

The role involves leading tours that promote careful observation and foster a secure and engaging environment for students, teachers, and chaperones to collaboratively explore their thoughts and insights.

Storm King hosts a significant number of visitors as part of group excursions each season, providing numerous guided tours. The peak season for school visits typically occurs during specific times of the year.

We value diversity among our artists and audiences, and our Independent Art Educators are expected to uphold Storm King's principles of collaboration, mutual respect, and reciprocity while working with students, educators, visitors, and fellow staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct engaging, inquiry-based, thematic tours for K-12 school groups in the outdoor setting of Storm King Art Center.
  • Deliver tours tailored to the specific needs and interests of each group while aligning with Storm King's educational objectives.
  • Develop unique routes for special requests.
  • Participate in annual training sessions at Storm King Art Center and review resources to prepare for tours.
  • Assist in program evaluation by providing feedback on group visits to Storm King staff as needed.
  • Coordinate with Storm King staff to address practical onsite requirements (navigation, first aid, etc.).

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Understand the group's schedule to effectively guide them onsite as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching within a museum environment.
  • Proven experience engaging directly with K-12 audiences.
  • Background in leading inquiry-based discussions or educational sessions.
  • Familiarity with modern and contemporary art.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Ability to adapt and respond while prioritizing educational goals.
  • Capability to work independently and address challenges effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Visual Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Education, or a related field, or an active artistic practice with a history of exhibitions.
  • Interest in or knowledge of landscape and ecology.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or American Sign Language is advantageous.
  • CPR/Red Cross First Aid certification is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to navigate outdoors in various weather conditions across expansive grounds.
  • Capacity to remain outdoors for extended periods during school visits.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Frequent standing for prolonged durations.
  • Occasional lifting, bending, or stooping.

Compensation:

The compensation for this freelance position is $75 per tour, in addition to $30 per hour for meetings and mandatory training. This role does not include benefits beyond those required by law.
