Storm King Art Center is in search of Independent Art Educators to engage with K-12 student groups throughout the upcoming season. This role offers a distinctive chance for students to experience modern and contemporary art while surrounded by nature. Through inquiry-driven tours, we foster opportunities for multi-sensory and interdisciplinary learning. Independent Educators will guide tours that promote close observation and create a secure and engaging environment for students, teachers, and chaperones to collaboratively explore their thoughts and insights.
Each season, Storm King welcomes a diverse array of visitors as part of group excursions, providing numerous guided tours tailored to educational needs. The peak period for school visits occurs during specific times of the year.
We value the diversity of our artists and audiences, and Independent Educators are expected to uphold Storm King's principles of collaboration, mutual respect, and reciprocity while working with students, educators, visitors, and fellow staff members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate engaging, inquiry-based, thematic tours for K-12 school groups in the outdoor setting of Storm King Art Center.
- Deliver tours that align with the interests and needs of the group while adhering to Storm King's educational objectives.
- Design new routes to accommodate unique requests from visiting groups.
- Participate in annual training sessions at Storm King Art Center and review resources to prepare for tours.
- Contribute to program assessments by providing feedback on group visits to Storm King staff as needed.
- Assist groups in connecting with Storm King staff to address practical onsite requirements.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Understand the schedule of groups to effectively guide them onsite as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in teaching within a museum or similar environment.
- Direct engagement experience with K-12 audiences.
- Proficiency in leading inquiry-based discussions or educational sessions.
- Familiarity with modern and contemporary art.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.
- Ability to adapt and respond to various learning goals.
- Capacity to work independently and address challenges effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in Visual Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Education, or a related field, or an active artistic practice with a history of exhibitions.
- Interest or knowledge in landscape and ecology.
- Fluency in Spanish or American Sign Language is advantageous.
- CPR/Red Cross First Aid certification is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to navigate outdoors in various weather conditions across expansive grounds.
- Capacity to remain outdoors for extended periods during school visits.
- Ability to utilize a two-way radio for communication.
- Frequent standing for long durations.
- Occasional lifting, bending, or stooping may be required.
COVID-19 Vaccination Policy:
Storm King aims for a fully vaccinated workforce and will consider requests for reasonable accommodations for medical and religious reasons in accordance with applicable laws.
Compensation:
The compensation for this freelance position is $75 per tour, along with $30 per hour for meetings and required training. This role does not include benefits beyond those mandated by law.
