About the Department

The Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Met is currently involved in a major initiative focused on the design and construction of the new Tang Wing. This project entails the assessment and relocation of the museum's vast collection of modern and contemporary art, which includes over 12,000 objects such as paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and time-based media.

General Responsibilities:

As the Collections Manager/Registrar, you will play a crucial role in coordinating the movement and evaluation of artworks to an offsite location in preparation for the Tang Wing construction. Collaborating closely with departmental leaders, you will oversee various activities related to the care and assessment of the collections during the Tang Wing renovation.

This position is defined by a specific timeframe.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the collections team and registrar department to plan the movement of artworks both onsite and offsite during the initial phase of the Tang Wing project.
  • Oversee the transportation, security, and documentation associated with the transfer of artworks to and from the museum.
  • Manage the budget for the relocation process.
  • Supervise a team of two direct reports.
  • Coordinate viewings of stored collections for evaluation by various stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with external personnel involved in the assessment and relocation process.
  • Update collection data in the museum's database and maintain relevant documentation.
  • Organize collections documentation in both digital and physical formats.
  • Exhibit flexibility to work across multiple locations.
  • Perform additional assigned duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience in museum collections management.
  • A Bachelor's degree (BA/BFA) is required; a Master's degree (MA) in Museum Studies or Collections Management is preferred.
  • Proven expertise in museum collections management.
  • Demonstrated experience in team management.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in collections management databases, particularly TMS.
  • Knowledge of archival materials and best practices in collections care.
  • Experience in handling and moving three-dimensional artworks.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Capability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with software such as TMS, Adobe Suite, and Microsoft Office.

Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000 annually.
  • This salary range serves as a general guideline and may vary based on individual qualifications and factors such as experience and education level.

Location Requirements:

Employees must reside within commuting distance of the Museum, covering states that enable daily travel to and from the Museum.
