Breast Imaging Specialist II

GENERAL OVERVIEW:
Under the supervision of the Mammography Manager, with accountability to the team facilitator and colleagues, the Mammography Technician Level II performs routine screening, diagnostic, and specialized mammography procedures. This role is crucial in providing essential information to physicians and radiologists for the diagnosis of breast-related conditions. Additional clerical and service responsibilities are also part of the role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure patients are adequately prepared for mammography and automated whole breast ultrasound procedures, providing clear explanations and instructions regarding the exams.
- Collect and document comprehensive medical histories from patients.
- Position patients effectively for examinations and conduct routine, specialized, and diagnostic mammograms, applying necessary compression techniques.
- Conduct bone density imaging as required, adhering to all protocols and ensuring accurate documentation.
- Demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to assess, treat, and care for both adult and geriatric patients, involving family members in the care plan and providing education tailored to the patient's developmental needs.
- Utilize AIDET principles in all interactions with patients to enhance customer service.
- Retrieve non-controlled medications as needed.
- Process imaging results and ensure quality verification.
- Report any malfunctions of imaging and x-ray equipment to the appropriate supervisor. Maintain cleanliness of equipment after each use and assist in ensuring adequate supply levels in work areas.
- Comply with all standards, policies, and procedures set forth by Northshore.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients who may be anxious or confused, as well as with physicians and other healthcare staff.
- Analytical skills to determine proper patient positioning and assess the quality of examinations performed.
- Advanced positioning skills in addition to routine mammography techniques.
- Effective communication skills to inform patients about examination procedures.
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program is required.
- ARRT certification and current ARRT registration are mandatory.
- ARRT Mammography certification and current registration are required.
- Current Illinois Emergency Management Agency license is necessary.
- One year of experience as a general radiographer is preferred; on-the-job training will be provided, with a preference for experience in mammography.
- Current CPR certification is required.
- Knowledge of proper body mechanics is essential.
