About the Role

Cook Children's Health Care System is seeking a highly skilled Patient Access Specialist to join our team. As a Patient Access Specialist, you will play a critical role in facilitating the patient registration process and establishing positive relationships with patients and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide access to services provided at the hospital and/or clinic
  • Facilitate the patient registration flow
  • Establish positive relationships with patients/families
  • Complete, present, and thoroughly explain legal, ethical, and compliance-related documents to patients
  • Work in a patient care area, but do not provide patient care
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year of Healthcare experience in a physician office or hospital setting
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Understanding of the revenue cycle and all appropriate financial resources for patients
  • Knowledge of JCAHO, Patient Rights and Responsibilities, HIPAA, HMOs, PPOs, Commercial Payers, and all tasks performed in the various Patient Access Service areas
  • Detail-oriented
  • Professional and clear communication
  • Working knowledge of computer skills
  • Basic understanding of insurance benefits, especially in-network versus out-of-network and co-insurance versus co-pay
  • Basic ability to balance cash reports
  • Basic understanding of legal paperwork
  • Basic typing/keyboarding
