Position OverviewUT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a Safety Compliance Officer.
This role involves inspecting construction sites and issuing work permits for various hazardous activities, including confined space entry, hot works, trenching, and high-altitude work.
Responsibilities include conducting investigations into workplace injuries, preparing detailed reports to document incidents, and providing recommendations to avert future occurrences.
Additionally, you will prepare for and respond to emergencies, including fires, flooding, and hazardous material incidents, utilizing personal protective equipment such as flame and chemical suits and respiratory protection.
This position is classified as essential, requiring personnel to report to work during emergencies to maintain institutional services or protect assets.
You will also oversee and manage small projects or inspection programs and perform other assigned duties.
Key QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess OSHA 10, OSHA 30, and OSHA 501 certifications, with a strong preference for candidates holding ASP or CSP credentials. Completion of SSH, CSHO, and SHEP course programs is also preferred.
A Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related field is strongly preferred, along with two years of directly related safety experience. Education may be considered in lieu of experience.
A Master’s degree in a safety-related field with no experience or relevant professional certification may also be considered in lieu of a degree with four years of directly related safety experience.
Military experience may be applicable for some of the required experience, and advanced degrees may substitute for experience requirements.
Job Responsibilities- Expertise in Occupational Safety is essential.
- Investigate safety and environmental incidents, identifying causes and preventive measures.
- Ensure compliance with employee health and safety standards across the organization.
- Conduct surveys of laboratories and facilities to verify adherence to safety regulations and procedures.
- Identify potential safety hazards, prepare reports on conditions, and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste.
- Provide safety training and assistance to various departments.
- This position is designated as essential, requiring personnel to report during emergencies.
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary.
This role requires considerable judgment in applying and interpreting safety regulations, standards, and procedures. Effective communication and customer service skills are necessary, along with the ability to collaborate with staff and faculty across departments during inspections or technical assistance.
Working EnvironmentWork is conducted both indoors and outdoors, with conditions involving exposure to hazardous equipment or materials. The role requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting.
