Lexington, Kentucky, United States Riverside Research Full time

Company Overview

Riverside Research is a distinguished independent nonprofit organization focused on national security, dedicated to advancing research and development that serves the national interest. We specialize in delivering high-quality technical services, innovative research, and prototype solutions to address some of the most pressing technical challenges faced by our nation. All positions at Riverside Research require U.S. Citizenship.

Position Summary

In today's world, the functionality of numerous systems is heavily reliant on computer technology. Most of these systems depend on systems software to efficiently manage various tasks and facilitate communication between hardware and higher-level software applications. Whether it involves an embedded system utilizing FPGA technology for critical performance tasks or a server employing a hypervisor for resource management, low-level code is essential to ensure that higher-level applications operate in a stable and organized environment. This foundational code is not only complex but also plays a crucial role in the security framework of all systems.

At Riverside Research, our Secure and Resilient Systems group is committed to enhancing this foundational code to provide our clients with secure infrastructures for their mission-critical software applications. This proactive approach is vital for staying ahead of potential threats rather than merely addressing issues as they arise. Our research efforts also leverage computational tools to analyze and implement protective measures across software layers, utilizing program analysis and compiler-based security strategies.

We are currently seeking an entry-level research scientist to contribute to the development of cutting-edge systems software, compiler technologies, and program analysis security mechanisms. As a vital member of our Secure and Resilient Systems team, the research scientist will be responsible for prototyping new functionalities within open-source operating systems (such as Linux), hypervisors (like Xen), compilers (including LLVM), and program analysis tools (for example, AFL++). A solid understanding of software development practices for large-scale projects (including version control and debugging techniques), as well as a comprehensive grasp of the system software stack and the software/hardware interface, will be essential for efficiently designing and prototyping innovative features that push the boundaries of systems, compilers, and program analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative solutions to address customer challenges related to systems software and compilers.
  • Prototype and assess features within significant software projects such as Linux or LLVM.
  • Create new tools and capabilities across various relevant programming languages.
  • Contribute to whitepapers and published research that document innovative work performed.
  • Document and communicate design decisions, technical challenges, and progress to technical program management.
  • Collaborate with team members on debugging, pair programming, and reviewing research papers and proposals.
  • Engage in relevant internal and customer meetings.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical field, such as computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or cybersecurity.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in software development practices for large projects (e.g., submitting pull requests, engaging with open-source communities, managing git branches).
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Effective communication and creative skills for developing, prototyping, benchmarking, and documenting significant security features integrated into existing systems.
  • Proficiency in various programming languages, along with a background in operating systems, computer architecture, programming languages, algorithms, and data structures.

Desired:

  • 2+ years of work experience or a Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of the research process, including reading and writing academic papers and ideation for innovative solutions.
  • A balanced approach between technical expertise and business insight.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and build solid working relationships with peers.
  • Self-motivated with the capability to manage time and technical tasks without direct oversight.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with both defensive and offensive cybersecurity tools.
  • Familiarity with Rust or other advanced system software languages and tools.

Compensation

The typical compensation range for this position is $75,000, based on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
