Position Summary

In today's technology-driven world, nearly every aspect relies on computer systems. These systems depend on 'systems software' to perform specific tasks and connect hardware with higher-level software. From embedded systems utilizing tightly-coupled FPGA fabric for performance and security-critical tasks to servers employing hypervisors for managing co-resident guests, low-level code is essential for ensuring that higher-level code operates in a structured and reliable environment. This foundational code is complex and crucial for the security integrity of all systems.

Riverside Research is on the lookout for an offensive cybersecurity researcher to contribute to the development of state-of-the-art systems security technologies. As an integral member of our Secure and Resilient Systems team, the researcher will engage in prototyping new functionalities across various domains, including offensive cyber vulnerability assessments and the implementation of new security features throughout the software stack. A solid understanding of software development practices for large-scale projects (such as version control and debugging techniques) and familiarity with the system software stack and software/hardware interfaces will be vital for the effective design and prototyping of innovative cybersecurity features.

The researcher will collaborate with a diverse team focused on creating both offensive and defensive security capabilities. Responsibilities will include prototyping and delivering both code and associated documentation/design documents. Furthermore, the researcher will actively participate in the research process, assisting the team in devising solutions to emerging challenges, breaking down complex problems into manageable tasks, implementing features, and evaluating the resulting prototypes. All team members are expected to hone their writing skills to effectively communicate their ideas and findings to both internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative offensive security solutions addressing customer challenges related to systems software.
  • Create new tools and capabilities using programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Rust, and Assembly.
  • Contribute to whitepapers and publications documenting groundbreaking work.
  • Communicate design decisions, technical challenges, and progress to technical program management.
  • Collaborate with team members on debugging, pair programming, and reviewing papers/proposals.
  • Engage in relevant internal and customer meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or cybersecurity) with 5 years of experience, or 3 years of experience with a Master's degree.
  • Strong software development fundamentals for large projects (e.g., submitting pull requests, engaging with open-source communities, managing git branches, and build systems).
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Creative and communicative skills to develop, prototype, benchmark, and document significant security features integrated into existing systems.
  • Proficiency in programming languages including C/C++, Python, and Assembly (e.g., x86-64, ARM).

Compensation

The compensation range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000, reflecting typical earnings based on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
