We specialize in delivering high-caliber technical services and pioneering solutions to tackle some of the most pressing technical challenges faced by our nation. All positions at Riverside Research necessitate U.S. Citizenship.

Position Summary

In today's digital landscape, computer systems are integral to nearly every aspect of our lives. These systems depend on 'systems software' to perform specific tasks and connect hardware with higher-level applications. From embedded systems utilizing FPGA technology to servers employing hypervisors, low-level code is essential for ensuring that higher-level applications operate in a stable and orderly environment. This foundational code is not only complex but also crucial for the security of all systems. At Riverside Research, our Secure and Resilient Systems group is committed to enhancing this code to provide secure foundations for mission-critical software.

We are currently seeking an Offensive Cybersecurity Research Specialist to contribute to the research and development of state-of-the-art systems security technologies. As a vital member of our Secure and Resilient Systems team, you will engage in prototyping new features across various domains, including offensive cyber vulnerability assessments and the implementation of innovative security features throughout the software stack. A solid understanding of software development practices for large-scale projects, including version control and debugging techniques, is essential for efficiently designing and prototyping significant advancements in cybersecurity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative security solutions driven by offensive strategies to address customer challenges related to systems software.
  • Create new tools and capabilities using programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Rust, and Assembly.
  • Contribute to whitepapers and published research that document groundbreaking work.
  • Communicate design decisions, technical challenges, and progress effectively to technical program management.
  • Collaborate with team members on debugging, pair programming, and reviewing research papers and proposals.
  • Participate in relevant internal and customer meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or cybersecurity) with a minimum of 5 years of experience, or 3 years with a Master's degree.
  • Strong software development fundamentals for large projects, including experience with pull requests, open-source community engagement, and version control systems.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Creative and effective communication skills for developing, prototyping, benchmarking, and documenting significant security features.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Python, and Assembly (e.g., x86-64, ARM).

Compensation

The typical compensation range for this position is between $100,000 and $130,000, depending on experience, location, and other relevant factors.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Riverside Research Institute is a not-for-profit, technology-oriented defense organization committed to serving our customers and supporting our staff. We are an affirmative action-equal opportunity employer and adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding recruitment and hiring. Riverside offers comprehensive compensation and benefits packages to our employees, basing employment decisions solely on technical experience, qualifications, and other job-related criteria.
