Position Summary

In today’s technology-driven landscape, virtually every aspect of our lives relies on computer systems. These systems depend on systems software to manage specific tasks and facilitate communication between hardware and higher-level software. From embedded systems utilizing tightly-coupled FPGA fabric for performance and security-critical tasks to servers employing hypervisors for managing co-resident guests, low-level code is essential for ensuring that higher-level code operates in a reliable and orderly manner. This foundational code is intricate and plays a crucial role in the security framework of all systems.

At Riverside Research, our Secure and Resilient Systems group is committed to enhancing this code to provide our clients with secure foundations for their mission-critical software environments. This proactive approach is vital for staying ahead of potential threats rather than merely reacting to vulnerabilities.

We are currently seeking an Offensive Cybersecurity Research Specialist to contribute to the research and development of state-of-the-art systems security technologies. As an integral member of our Secure and Resilient Systems team, you will be responsible for prototyping innovative features across various domains, including offensive cyber vulnerability assessments and the implementation of new security functionalities at any level of the software stack. A solid understanding of software development practices for large-scale projects (such as version control and debugging techniques) and familiarity with the system software stack and the software/hardware interface will be essential for effectively designing and prototyping advanced cybersecurity features.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative offensive security solutions addressing customer challenges related to systems software.
  • Create new tools and capabilities using programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Rust, and Assembly.
  • Contribute to whitepapers and published research that document groundbreaking work.
  • Communicate design decisions, technical challenges, and progress to technical program management.
  • Collaborate with team members on debugging, pair programming, and reviewing research papers and proposals.
  • Engage in relevant internal and customer meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or cybersecurity) with 5 years of experience, or 3 years of experience with a Master's degree.
  • Strong software development fundamentals for large projects (e.g., submitting pull requests, engaging with open-source communities, managing git branches).
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Excellent communication and creative skills to develop, prototype, benchmark, and document significant security features integrated into existing systems.
  • Proficiency in programming languages including C/C++, Python, and Assembly (e.g., x86-64, ARM).

Compensation

The typical compensation range for this position is between $100,000 and $130,000, based on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
