Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, the Career Counselor works independently, delivering high-caliber career services and outreach initiatives tailored to specific cohorts, including targeted students, recent alumni, and faculty members.

This entails offering personalized career counseling sessions in various formats, such as one-on-one meetings and group workshops, conducted either in person or virtually.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans, develops and implements professional and career development programs targeted to students in partnership with the academic sector and employers to ensure their smooth transition into the workplace
  • Provides career counseling and coaching that include preparing resumes/portfolios, interviewing, and developing interview and networking competencies to support career plans that align with students' career goals
  • Conducts workshops and facilitates groups on various career development topics
  • Develops relationships and communications with academic partners from assigned colleges and related academic clubs and relevant professional/community organizations
  • Engages academic stakeholders fostering connections between employers and relevant programs to build long-term interaction with the University
  • Designs and conducts classroom presentations on various career-readiness topics, and relevant career education resources
  • Assesses needs and coordinates learning/programmatic outcomes with faculty in collaboration with key employers, community partners, and the Center team
  • Supports the University, Division and Center's missions and goals
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to function effectively in a culturally-diverse environment and establish relationships and partnerships with various stakeholders
  • Skilled in the development and use of virtual and on-line, distance-learning employment-related tools and resources
  • Knowledge of software applications: such as word processing, spreadsheet, power point and database management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, career development, and counseling techniques
  • Excellent communication, presentation, teamwork, and organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Possess excellent customer service and public relations skills and experience in effectively networking with faculty, staff, administrators, and employers strongly desired
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters
  • Ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; problem-solve, troubleshoot, reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make sound decisions and appropriate recommendations
  • Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and prepare statistical reports
  • Ability to develop and coordinate career/employment programs for students while interfacing effectively with faculty, deans and employers
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees, employers and external agencies
Required Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience
  • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one (1) year of experience
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three (3) years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field
  • Three (3) years of experience advising or counseling students in a higher education setting
  • Experience with program management, setting basic milestones, identifying resource needs, and team development
  • Three (3) years of experience in developing, implementing, and administrating in-person, hybrid, and live programs relevant to career development, counseling, or employment
  • Certified to administer and interpret career assessments (Strong, MBTI)
Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional III

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,574/month - $5,852/month

CSU Salary Range: $5,276/month - $7,517/month
