Position Summary:

The Limited Term Deputy Sheriff of Recreation Patrol operates under the general guidance of Patrol Sergeants to uphold law and order while ensuring the safety of individuals and property across the waterways and trails. The role requires a flexible schedule aligned with the operational needs of the Sheriff's Office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts patrols across lakes, rivers, and trails, enforcing applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepares and submits detailed reports on patrol activities.
  • Engages with the public to address inquiries, conduct investigations, and provide follow-up assistance.
  • Maintains all necessary equipment for effective patrol operations.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

  • Ability to foster and maintain positive working relationships with various stakeholders, including officials, agencies, colleagues, and the public.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Capability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Thorough understanding of Sheriff's Office operations and regulations to ensure effective functioning.
  • Ability to respond swiftly and calmly in emergency situations, implementing appropriate actions.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality in all job-related matters.
  • Familiarity with County and Sheriff's Office policies, with the ability to apply them in diverse scenarios.
  • Knowledge of local waterways and trails within County boundaries.
  • Understanding of state laws, including felonies, misdemeanors, and ordinances.
  • Proficiency in swimming and using life-saving equipment.
  • Basic computer skills, including mathematical calculations.
  • Physical fitness to meet departmental standards.
  • Skillful operation of various law enforcement equipment and vehicles.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 60 post-secondary credits. Must be certified or certifiable by the Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) upon hiring.

Experience: Prior experience in law enforcement is preferred. Must meet annual qualifications as required by LESB, including CPR/AED and TIME certifications, and maintain a valid driver's license with corrected vision to 20/20.

Working Conditions:

Physical Demands: The role involves approximately 90% of time spent on water or trails in a recreational vehicle, engaging in various physical activities. The remaining 10% may include other physical actions as required.

Environmental Conditions: The position requires spending over 85% of time outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and precipitation. Traversing uneven terrain may be necessary.
