Job Summary

The Academic Advisor I at MSU Denver is a key member of our student success team, responsible for providing advising services to students on degree requirements and long-term degree planning. This role involves conducting advising sessions, utilizing knowledge of curriculum to help students plan their academic path, and preparing and maintaining advising documentation in our student success/customer management system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide advising services to students, including conducting advising sessions, assisting with course selection, and providing information on career planning and financial literacy.
  • Monitor progress and retention of assigned students, utilizing advising-based systems to track and engage students who are at-risk of not being retained.
  • Participate in university-wide and unit-specific advising professional development opportunities, including advising retreats, webinars, and conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including serving on committees and councils, and participating in retention initiatives.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience in a professional setting helping others reach their academic, professional, and/or personal goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a diverse community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, prioritizing, and preparation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or an academic discipline.
  • Experience using computer-based student information system(s), such as Ellucian Banner or PeopleSoft.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable.
  • Experience working with and/or being sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population.
Work Schedule
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • Exempt.
  • Days of the week: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Evenings and weekend work: None.
  • Schedule: Hybrid, with three days per week in person on campus and two remote days.
  • Travel: None.
