Student Success Advisor

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Student Success Advisor works under the guidance of the Senior Student Success Advisor and the Director of Advising, Retention, and Persistence. The role is crucial in supporting the retention, persistence, and graduation of both new and returning students. Advisors are responsible for providing students with up-to-date and accurate information regarding academic programs and institutional policies, empowering them to take charge of their educational journeys and career choices. They also facilitate referrals to campus resources and services to keep students engaged and on track towards their academic goals, guiding them through the completion of their degree or certificate programs.

The primary objective of this role is to enhance the persistence, retention, and successful completion rates of students at the Community College of Denver. Student Success Advisors are dedicated to supporting their assigned students throughout their academic journey, focusing on key milestones and an advising philosophy that encourages students to fulfill their certificate or degree requirements, successfully transition to a four-year institution, or enter the workforce upon graduation. Staff members are expected to embody the mission, vision, and values of the community college.

Key Responsibilities

Student Guidance and Pathway Development

  • Assist and counsel students in achieving their academic and career aspirations.
  • Provide insights into the college's program pathways and clusters. Collaborate with students to identify appropriate placements based on assessment criteria, develop tailored academic plans, guide registration processes, and connect students with internal and external resources to overcome educational challenges.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of enrollment and financial aid policies, as well as academic program specifics.
  • Document all advising interactions accurately using designated systems.
  • Ensure that advisee caseloads align with the advising model and monitor student progress effectively.

Communication and Support Services

  • Engage with all relevant stakeholders to address individual student needs, utilizing tools such as the Early Alert System and referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Continuously update knowledge of program pathways and academic options through professional development and training.

Monitoring Student Progress and Program Completion

  • Encourage students to transition from guided advising to independent decision-making, including major declaration, progress tracking, course selection, and utilization of the student portal.
  • Provide accurate advising on degree and certificate requirements to ensure adherence to program plans, facilitating successful transfers or workforce readiness post-graduation.

Professional Growth

  • Stay informed on best practices in advising through participation in meetings, professional development opportunities, and review of relevant literature.

Additional Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, Sociology, or a related field.

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in academic advising or counseling within higher education or related fields.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Understanding of academic advising and career development principles.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including first-generation and low-income students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to foster student learning and development.
  • Experience in conducting effective advising sessions.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and similar software.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively within a team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Master's Degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, Sociology, or a related field.

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in academic advising or counseling in higher education or related settings.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Bilingual proficiency.
  • Familiarity with student information systems.
  • Understanding of academic requirements and career pathways.
  • Knowledge of workforce education trends and career options.
  • Ability to connect students with community resources and support services.
  • Effective presentation and communication skills.
