Job Summary

Columbia University is seeking a dynamic and experienced ESOL Instructor to join our team in a variable hours position. As a key member of our Community Impact (CI) division, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality English language instruction to adult learners in the Morningside Heights, Harlem, and Washington Heights communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching and Instruction
    • Create a student-centered, engaging learning environment that fosters academic success and personal growth.
    • Develop and implement theme-based, contextualized lessons that cater to diverse learning styles and needs.
    • Assess student progress through quizzes, tests, and assignments, and adjust instruction to maximize oral language production.
  • Curriculum Development
    • Design and implement thematic, content-based curricula that incorporate innovative teaching methods and technology integration.
    • Develop lesson plans that meet students' learning objectives and promote a growth mindset.
  • Student Support
    • Maintain accurate attendance records and work collaboratively with the GED Manager and Case Manager to address student needs, participation, and retention.
    • Provide individualized support and guidance to students to help them develop a growth mindset and achieve their academic goals.
  • Program Evaluation
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional strategies and make data-driven decisions to improve student outcomes.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement program evaluations that assess student progress and program impact.
Requirements
  • Education and Certification
    • Bachelor's degree required; Teaching Certification or Master's in TESOL preferred.
  • Experience
    • Up to two years of related teaching experience, preferably in grant-funded workforce development and/or literacy programs.
  • Skills and Qualifications
    • Strong teaching and instructional skills, with experience in developing and implementing thematic, content-based curricula.
    • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths.
    • Proficient in integrating technology into lessons and using Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a diverse population of adult learners.
    • Strong awareness of the barriers facing immigrants looking to integrate into the US workforce and academic environment.
