Job Responsibilities

This role is compensated hourly and is structured to maintain an average of 28 hours per week. Please note that this position does not include any paid benefits.

The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) is dedicated to enhancing customer satisfaction while fostering a skilled workforce. As a Licensing Specialist, you will be instrumental in supporting Virginia's economic growth. Your primary responsibility will be to manage applications and modifications for licensure and certification from both businesses and individuals for the respective regulatory boards.

In this capacity, you will provide essential telephone support and deliver comprehensive and precise information regarding the relevant statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to your assigned boards. You will serve as a Licensing Specialist for various board sections, including but not limited to Contractors, Real Estate, Barbers and Cosmetology, Architects, Engineers, Land Surveyors, Asbestos, Lead, Home Inspectors, and Wastewater Operators. Although the immediate requirement is for the Contractors section, this recruitment will also address multiple wage positions.

As part of DPOR, your contributions will significantly impact Virginia's economic landscape by assisting qualified individuals in establishing businesses and pursuing careers in their fields of choice. DPOR operates under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia, with regulatory boards composed of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor, overseeing a range of professions and occupations. Our mission is to safeguard the public by ensuring minimum competency, investigating complaints, and enforcing compliance with state laws and regulations.

Telework Options: This position may allow for limited telework, but it is not a full-time remote position. New hires must complete 90 days in the role before submitting a telework schedule for consideration.

Minimum Qualifications


• Exceptional attention to detail.

• Capability to follow both verbal and written instructions.

• Proficiency in analyzing and comparing information, making informed decisions, and exercising discretion in eligibility assessments.

• Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team with minimal supervision while managing multiple responsibilities.

• Strong customer service experience with outstanding interpersonal skills.

• Familiarity with computer software applications.

• Competence in preparing written communications.

Additional Considerations


• Prior experience with Microsoft Excel and data entry is preferred.

• Experience in a regulatory environment is advantageous.
