Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is dedicated to safeguarding its citizens through effective regulatory oversight of Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and CPA firms. The Regulatory Affairs and Policy Specialist plays a crucial role in managing the statutory and regulatory framework of the Virginia Board of Accountancy (VBOA). This includes overseeing updates, guidance, and maintenance of regulatory processes, as well as managing records and developing relevant policies.

This position involves:

  • Acting as the VBOA's liaison for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) inquiries.
  • Facilitating communication with various governmental entities, including the Governor's Office, Attorney General's Office, and members of the General Assembly.
  • Collaborating with professional organizations such as the Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).
  • Providing analytical and technical writing support to the Enforcement Director.
  • Serving as the VBOA's Historian and assisting the Executive Director with special projects.

Essential Qualifications

  • Independence in decision-making and task execution.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • In-depth knowledge of the legal and regulatory landscape, including state and federal government operations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies, and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills for data interpretation and policy recommendation.
  • Familiarity with the Administrative Process Act and Freedom of Information Act.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, including public speaking abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Understanding of information systems that support operational management and decision-making.
  • Awareness of the range of services provided by CPAs.

Additional Considerations

Experience in regulatory compliance and familiarity with Virginia's legislative processes are advantageous. Proven skills in technical writing will be beneficial.
