The Senior Portfolio Manager, Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the management of a substantial commercial banking portfolio and assisting commercial banking teams with new business initiatives. This role is accomplished through the supervision of a team comprising Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts with diverse experience levels. The typical portfolio encompasses various types of commercial loans, including lines of credit, term notes, and commercial mortgages, with an aggregate portfolio balance exceeding $500 million.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the assignment, management, and prioritization of ongoing workflows, while mentoring Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts through work audits and constructive feedback, contributing to their professional development through one-on-one interactions, active career planning, and timely performance evaluations.
  • Act as the primary liaison with designated commercial banking teams, ensuring that new business activities are prioritized while managing portfolio responsibilities such as renewals, annual reviews, covenant testing, and reporting exceptions in compliance with bank policies.
  • Directly manage a select portfolio of the most complex and significant accounts, which includes gathering, analyzing, and assessing all business and personal financial data to monitor loan relationships, conducting portfolio management tasks like underwriting annual reviews and renewals, performing covenant testing verifications, and managing reporting and documentation exceptions to ensure accurate risk ratings.
  • Review credit approval presentations prepared by Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts, focusing on data accuracy and risk identification, ensuring that appropriate governance structures are in place based on the risk profile.
  • Provide quality control in the underwriting process by reviewing documentation and offering feedback to ensure comprehensive and accurate underwriting materials before supervisor review.
  • Serve as the main point of contact between commercial credit and lending teams, managing new business pipelines and portfolio management activities, while ensuring that lending relationships adhere to the bank's risk tolerance and portfolio management expectations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or accounting; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Formal credit training from a reputable bank, with a solid understanding of general credit and risk principles, mitigants, and banking policies/procedures.
  • Over 10 years of experience in financial services with a comprehensive understanding of the banking environment, products, and supporting processes and technology; commercial credit experience is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in team management is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management abilities.
  • Proven capability to manage tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to establish client relationships and collaborate within a team environment.
