The Senior Portfolio Manager, Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the management of a substantial commercial banking portfolio while supporting commercial banking teams in new business ventures. This role involves supervising a team of Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts with diverse experience levels. The portfolio typically encompasses various types of commercial loans, including lines of credit, term notes, and commercial mortgages, with an aggregate balance exceeding $500 million.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the assignment, oversight, and prioritization of ongoing tasks, mentoring Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts through work audits and constructive feedback, while fostering employee development through one-on-one interactions, career planning, and timely performance reviews.
- Act as the primary liaison with designated commercial banking teams, ensuring that new business initiatives are prioritized while managing portfolio responsibilities such as renewals, annual reviews, covenant testing, and documentation exceptions in line with bank policies.
- Directly oversee a select portfolio of the most complex and significant accounts, including gathering, analyzing, and verifying all business and personal financial data to monitor loan relationships, as well as conducting underwriting for annual reviews and renewals.
- Review credit approval submissions from Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts, ensuring data accuracy, risk identification, and appropriate governance structures based on risk profiles.
- Provide quality control in the underwriting process by reviewing work and offering feedback to ensure comprehensive and accurate underwriting documents before supervisor review.
- Serve as the primary contact between commercial credit and lending teams, managing new business pipelines and portfolio management activities while ensuring compliance with the bank's risk tolerance and portfolio management expectations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or accounting; a Master's degree is preferred.
- Formal credit training from a reputable bank, with a solid understanding of credit and risk principles, mitigations, and banking policies/procedures.
- Over 10 years of experience in financial services, with a strong grasp of the banking environment, products, and related processes and technology; commercial credit experience is highly desirable.
- Prior experience in team management is preferred but not mandatory.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time management abilities.
- Proven capability to manage tasks efficiently and effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build client relationships and collaborate within a team environment.
