Job Summary

The Director of Strategic Portfolio Management is responsible for leading the Technology portfolio management function, providing guidance to technology leadership and other executives on the timing and anticipated value of initiatives and investments.

This role involves tracking progress, identifying potential conflicts and dependencies, and streamlining execution. The Director must work closely with senior leaders to create, facilitate, engage, maintain, and coordinate portfolio management activities across the technology organization.

The position requires establishing, meeting, and continuously monitoring goals and objectives while maintaining alignment with strategic and foundational goals and objectives.

The Director will guide the establishment and necessary revisions of standard processes for corporate initiative intake, prioritization, communication of the corporate portfolio, resource deployment, progress monitoring, and evaluation of the portfolio's effectiveness.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership in the strategic planning process, giving guidance, advice, and input into the organization's ability to realize strategies through investment appraisals, prioritization, and resource planning.
  • Aligns the technology portfolio of work to the business strategy, serving as a thought leader and change agent in the establishment of org-wide strategy for unified portfolio, program, and project management.
  • Provides regular updates on portfolio performance and value delivery, implementing standards and structures for monitoring progress against defined outcome measures.
  • Develops and continuously improves tools to support technology leaders in monitoring progress towards strategic outcome targets.
  • Continuously improves portfolio processes and systems to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Implements standards and structures to support portfolio development and execution, including cross-functional huddles to give line of sight and support coordination across the portfolio of initiatives.
  • Hires, leads, manages, coaches, develops, and evaluates direct and indirect reports.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject area.
  • 8-10 years of relevant experience in the management of strategic portfolio, strategic execution, and/or program/project delivery services.
  • At least 3 years of experience in quantitative portfolio management, leading and managing large-scale programs, and knowledgeable of agile models.
  • At least 2 years of experience negotiating with outside vendors, including negotiating contracts, prices, resolving service issues, and reconciling differences.
  • Experience developing strategic initiatives that align with business goals and budget.
  • Experience working with technology organizations, including teams in software development, infrastructure, digital, data management, and others.
  • At least 3 years of managing 5+ person teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SPM platforms like Planview.
  • Experience implementing business processes, protocols, and best practices.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining relationships with individuals at various levels of the organization, such as peers, internal/external stakeholders, business partners, senior-level managers, and executives.
  • Experience influencing stakeholders at all levels of an organization.
  • Certification in Project Management (PMP) as granted by PMI preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • MS Office Suite with strong proficiency in PowerPoint and data visualization/storytelling by numbers.
  • Experience with SPM tools, preferably Planview.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts and build teams.
  • Demonstrated creativity and flexibility.
  • Ability to operate in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated innovative approach to problem resolution.
  • Effective analytical ability to develop and analyze options, recommend solutions to, and solve complex problems and issues.
