Department Overview

The Aerospace Engineering Department at San Jose State University is dedicated to providing a comprehensive education through its ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science (BSAE) and Master of Science (MSAE) programs in Aerospace Engineering. Our curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning and innovative teaching methods, equipping students for successful careers in various aerospace sectors, including research, design, development, testing, and integration of aircraft and space systems. The department serves approximately 480 undergraduate and 80 graduate students.

Students enrolled in the MSAE Program have the opportunity to focus on areas such as sustainable aviation, aerospace structural design, astrodynamics, space systems engineering, hypersonics, and propulsion. They can collaborate with faculty and industry professionals, including NASA engineers, on projects like microsatellite design and testing, the development of a new hypersonic facility, and the application of machine learning techniques for structural health monitoring. Additionally, students are encouraged to engage in extracurricular activities, such as the Spaceport America Cup, and present their research at esteemed conferences like the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics SciTech.

Key Responsibilities

Lecturers are expected to deliver courses using student-focused teaching strategies, work alongside the Aerospace Engineering Assessment Coordinator to evaluate learning outcomes, maintain office hours as per university guidelines, and participate in peer reviews of their teaching practices. It is essential for lecturers to seek clarification from the Department Chair regarding university policies and departmental procedures related to grading, curriculum, and academic integrity.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and address the diverse needs of students, including variations in age, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and academic preparation through inclusive teaching methods.
  • Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to organize all course materials and facilitate student engagement.
  • Ensure all classes are conducted as scheduled throughout the semester, adhering to the assigned mode of instruction (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field for teaching lower division undergraduate courses.
  • A Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field for teaching upper division undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the subject matter relevant to the teaching assignment, supported by professional experience or a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Evidence of successful academic performance in previous roles.
  • An understanding of and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a diverse student population, gained through relevant experience.
