Patient Care Assistant

Position Overview:
The Patient Care Assistant plays a crucial role in delivering both direct and indirect patient support within various healthcare environments, including hospitals, clinics, and home health settings. This position operates under the close supervision of a registered nurse or physician.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support healthcare professionals during routine examinations and procedures, ensuring the availability of necessary equipment and supplies during critical situations.
- In psychiatric care, assist patients with reality orientation, engage in behavior modification strategies, and provide informal therapeutic support to patients and their families.
- Implement verbal de-escalation techniques for potentially aggressive patients and assist in managing their physical safety.
- Facilitate age-appropriate activities for children and monitor therapeutic environments to meet the emotional and safety needs of all patients.
- Observe, gather, and document patient information during care, promptly reporting any significant changes to the supervising nurse or physician.
- Assist patients and their families during the admission process, providing orientation and support throughout their healthcare experience.
- Deliver care and treatments as specified in the care plan, including vital signs measurement, specimen collection, and basic wound care.
- Provide direct personal care for daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility assistance.
- Perform indirect care tasks, including maintaining cleanliness in work areas, changing linens, restocking supplies, and transporting patients and specimens.
- Reinforce educational materials provided by healthcare professionals and document patient comprehension of instructions.
Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or GED required.
Licensure/Certification:
- Must be listed as a Nursing Assistant I with the appropriate health department.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers is mandatory.
Experience: A minimum of six months of relevant experience in nursing assistance, which may include completion of a nursing assistant course.
Skills: Proficiency in verbal and written English, along with basic computer skills.
