Position Summary:

The Financial Counselor plays a crucial role in ensuring that patients have a seamless financial experience by assisting them in understanding their insurance benefits and potential financial responsibilities. This position serves as the primary contact for patients seeking financial guidance.

Reporting Structure: The Financial Counselor reports directly to the Director of Business Services, who is responsible for overseeing the achievement of departmental goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in the healthcare sector or equivalent educational background is necessary.
  • Experience in credit, collections, and billing within a healthcare environment, particularly in a hospital, is essential.
  • Proficiency in operating personal computers and office equipment is required.
  • Ability to interpret billing manuals and insurance policies is crucial.
  • Familiarity with the third-party review process and payer funding is important.
  • Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary contact for financial inquiries, engaging with patients and their families to gather and understand relevant financial, social, and medical histories.
  • Evaluate patients' current financial situations by verifying insurance benefits and confirming coverage details.
  • Provide counseling to patients regarding their out-of-pocket expenses and assist in collecting payments, including deductibles and outstanding balances.
  • Support patients and their families in accessing available funding options, including private and governmental resources.
  • Initiate financial screenings to determine eligibility for assistance programs and help patients complete necessary documentation.
  • Ensure that pre-authorization and referral requirements are met prior to scheduled services.
  • Communicate financial coverage statuses and decisions to all relevant parties.
  • Review explanations of benefits from payers to assist patients in understanding claims processing.
  • Facilitate resolution of billing disputes in collaboration with the Billing department.
  • Maintain accurate patient demographic information and provide estimates for elective procedures.
  • Engage with patients and families in a courteous and professional manner, demonstrating sensitivity to their needs.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to team development and education.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent listening and communication skills, with a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain composure in high-stress situations and demonstrate empathy.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Proficient in data entry and basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to communicate effectively and perform various physical tasks.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 25 lbs. may be necessary.
  • Ability to work in environments that may expose the employee to health risks.
