Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Financial Counselor plays a crucial role in ensuring that patients have a seamless financial experience by guiding them through the complexities of insurance benefits and potential financial obligations. Acting as the primary contact for financial inquiries, the Financial Counselor is responsible for collecting payments, establishing payment plans, generating cost estimates, and advising patients on their insurance coverage both in person and via phone. Additionally, this role involves evaluating patient referrals for outpatient services and assisting with pre-authorization for hospital admissions. The Financial Counselor also helps patients explore eligibility for government programs and CapRock Emergency's financial assistance options.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Director of Business Services, who is responsible for overseeing the achievement of specific goals and objectives.

Educational Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, with proof of completion required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in healthcare or equivalent educational background is essential.
  • Experience in credit, collections, and billing within a healthcare context, preferably in a hospital environment, is necessary.
  • Proficiency in using personal computers and office equipment is required.
  • Ability to interpret billing manuals and understand insurance and third-party coverage.
  • Familiarity with the third-party review process and payer funding procedures is important.
  • Knowledge of government/state payer eligibility criteria is essential.
  • Understanding of medical and insurance terminology is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary resource for financial assistance inquiries, engaging with patients and their families to gather relevant financial, social, and medical histories.
  • Evaluate patients' current financial situations by verifying insurance benefits and confirming coverage details.
  • Communicate patients' financial responsibilities and insurance benefits clearly.
  • Provide counseling on out-of-pocket expenses, collect necessary payments, and develop payment plans as needed.
  • Support patients and their families in accessing available funding from both private and governmental sources, including insurance and Medicare.
  • Initiate financial screening processes to determine eligibility for assistance programs, assisting patients in completing necessary documentation.
  • Coordinate with physician offices to ensure pre-authorization and referral requirements are fulfilled prior to services.
  • Inform patients and providers if acceptable payment arrangements cannot be established for elective procedures.
  • Communicate financial coverage statuses and decisions to all relevant parties.
  • Ensure accurate financial classification and update patient information in the system as necessary.
  • Review explanations of benefits from payers to assist patients in understanding claims processing.
  • Collaborate with the Billing department to resolve disputed billing issues through effective communication.
  • Maintain accurate patient demographic records and provide estimates for elective procedures.
  • Uphold a professional demeanor in all patient interactions, demonstrating sensitivity to their needs.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to team development through training and support.
  • Adhere to company policies and comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

  • Ability to maintain composure in high-stress situations, demonstrating empathy and exceptional customer service.
  • Proficient in managing multiple priorities effectively and efficiently.

  • Knowledge of current federal and state healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and EMTALA.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to communicate effectively and perform tasks that involve sitting, standing, and walking.
